Footage shared by the outlet Press Trust of India showed the plane sinking over a residential quarter of the western Indian city of Ahmedabad, and then the sound of a blast and a ball of fire. The Press Trust then shared images of medics rushing casualties on stretches. The chairman of the group that operates Air India said in a statement that its flight, which was bound for London's Gatwick Airport, was involved in a tragic air incident. The Associated Press reports that it's the first crash of this kind of aircraft, a Boeing 787 Dreamliner. Reuters said the aircraft gave a mayday call signalling an emergency before it crashed. The last accident involving Air India was in 2020, when more than 20 people were killed. Dear Hadid, NPR News, Mumbai.

The overnight curfew has expired for the one square mile of downtown Los Angeles. The city has been mostly quiet. There have been several days of sometimes violent clashes between protesters opposing federal immigration raids and law enforcement. President Trump has ordered thousands of National Guard troops and US Marines to la, saying the city would have burned. California authorities are suing Trump to stop the deployments. Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass says the raids and the deployments make the situation worse.

When you raid Home Depots and workplaces, when you tear parents and children apart, and when you run armored caravans through our streets, you're not trying to keep anyone safe. You're trying to cause fear and panic.

But Speaking to a U.S. senate panel yesterday, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth refused to rule out the possibility that President Trump could order more U.S. military troops to even more U.S. cities. Meanwhile, another operation appears to be taking hold in California's heartland. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials reportedly went to several farms on Tuesday. From member station kvpr, Joshua Yeager reports.

Federal agents targeted at least three California farms. The United Farm Workers union tells NPR some of their members witnessed the raids. Videos posted on social media also shows ICE agents chasing workers down in a field. Teresa Romero leads the United Farm Workers. She says Trump is going after the wrong people with his current immigration policies.

It is just horrible what's happening to our people in our communities, to people who have been working in every culture for decades, putting food on our tables, families being separated, children living in fear. It's just heartbreaking.

ICE did not immediately return NPR's comment request. For NPR News, I'm Joshua Yeager in Bakersfield, California.

This is npr. More states are working to limit the items people can buy with federal food assistance. The Trump administration has granted waivers to Utah, Idaho and Arkansas that would allow for these restrictions. NPR's Katia Riddle reports.

The administration argues that by limiting sugary foods and drinks, they will help curb the risk of chronic diseases like diabetes and heart disease. Secretary of Agriculture Brooke Rollins spoke about these changes, disallowing taxpayer funded benefits to.

Purchase unhealthy items like soda, candy and other junk food.

There are now six states with such policies and more than a dozen that are pursuing them. Secretary of Health and Human Services Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. Said that he plans in the future to limit purchases of ultra processed foods as well. Experts on food policy warn that it can be difficult to define what exactly is an ultra processed food and caution that there is no data showing reducing benefits for certain foods leads to better health outcomes. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessant returns to Capitol Hill today for a Senate hearing. Yesterday he told a House panel that President Trump's global terrorists could be paused on some countries. Besant says that's if those countries are working in good faith to secure new U.S. trade agreements. There are exciting new images of the sun's south pole. They're from the European Union Space Agency's solar orbiter mission. It returned good photos yesterday. These show the sun from an angle that scientists have never before seen. Researchers hope to learn about the sun's atmosphere and how solar wind flow forms. I'm Korva Coleman, NPR News from Washington.
