Live from NPR News in Washington, I'm Lakshmi Singh. Iranian media are reporting that 78 people have been killed and more than 300 injured in Israel's airstrikes in Iran. NPR could not independently confirm the casualty figures. Israel launched an early morning attack on Iran, saying it was targeting nuclear facilities and military targets. NPR's Hadil Al Shalchi has the latest.
Hadil Al Shalchi
Iran's farce news agency published online images of destroyed buildings and rubble strewn on roads in what it said were civilian areas in Tehran, reporting that dozens have been killed and injured. Videos posted online showed smoke billowing from neighborhoods across the capital. Israel's military said it struck Iran's main nuclear facility as well as dozens of military targets, killing three top security chiefs and several nuclear scientists. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has long warned he will not allow Iran to create a nuclear weapon, something that Iran says it doesn't want. On Thursday, the International Atomic Energy Agency for the first time in 20 years, censured Iran for non compliance with its inspections of nuclear facilities. Hadil Alshalchi, NPR News, Tel Aviv.

Kilmar. Abrego Garcia, the Maryland man who was erroneously deported to his native El Salvador, is pleading not guilty to human smuggling charges. His attorney entered the plea at Abrego Garcia's arraignment today in Nashville, Tennessee. The case amplified President Trump's confrontation with the judiciary after Abrego Garcia was deported in mid March. He was returned to the US Last week to face criminal charges. For now, President Trump is being allowed to keep the California National Guard deployed in Los Angeles. An appeals court has paused an earlier ruling that found Trump unlawfully federalize guard members to respond to mass protests over what activists argue are indiscriminate detentions by federal immigration agents. Prayer services and vigils are taking place across the United Kingdom following the Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad that killed people on the ground and 241 people on board the flight, including dozens of British nationals. Villa Marx reports the grief has overwhelmed several British Indian communities.
Donald Marks
Though the sole survivor of the Air India flight was a British national seated in seat 11A, the airline has confirmed that 52 other UK citizens died when the aircraft smashed into the ground soon after takeoff. As police have continued to examine the site of the crash and release the bodies of the dead to their families. Tributes have been paid across Britain to those who perished, including parents and young children travelling together. While forensic experts in India are racing to identify the remaining dead, community leaders in Britain have hailed those who did not survive, including Akhil Nanabawa and Hane Varaji from the west of England, who'd been widely loved and deeply respected. One London student who was denied boarding for the fight told the BBC she was happy that her life was saved. For NPR News, I'm Donald Marks in London.

It's NPR News. Global climate warming is making a lot of people rethink how we build our homes and communities. From member station kunc, Ray Solomon reports. It's also changing how we take them apart.

All the concrete, bricks, wood and asphalt in our buildings, houses, roads and bridges make up a big chunk of global greenhouse gas emissions. The growing deconstruction movement is trying to do better. Deconstruction contractor Anna Perks says her team doesn't just demolish old buildings, they take a systematic approach to unbuilding piece by piece.
Anna Perks
Typically, what happens is a bulldozer will come in, smash it all, it'll all get trashed. But deconstruction, we tried to salvage and recycle as much as possible.
Rae Solomon
She says deconstruction is step one in the circular economy of construction materials, harvesting lumber, say, from an old house rather than a forest. That saves the emissions it would take to make new materials from scratch. For NPR News, I'm Rae Solomon.

Two men are spending time behind bars more than two years, all because of a toilet. Well, a $6.4 million, 18 carat gold toilet that authorities say the duo stole from an English mansion in 2019. Authorities say the golden commode was on display as a piece of contemporary art at the country mansion where former British Prime Minister Winston Churchill was born. The apparently fully functional toilet reportedly was never recovered. US Stocks are trading lower this hour. The dow is down 416 points, or nearly 1%. I'm Lakshmi Singh, NPR News.

Global warming is prompting a reevaluation of construction and deconstruction methods to mitigate environmental impact.
Key Points:
The construction sector significantly contributes to global greenhouse gas emissions through materials like concrete, bricks, wood, and asphalt.
The deconstruction movement advocates for dismantling buildings methodically to salvage and recycle materials, contrasting traditional demolition practices.
Anna Perks, a deconstruction contractor, emphasizes the importance of this approach:
Notable Quote:
"Typically, what happens is a bulldozer will come in, smash it all, it'll all get trashed. But deconstruction, we try to salvage and recycle as much as possible," explained Anna Perks ([03:51]).
