Israel's Defense Minister Israel Katz said the strikes on Iran were preemptive and that Israel was expecting Iran to retaliate with a missile and drone attack. The Israeli attacks were not unexpected. President Trump said recently that he had waived off an earlier strike by Israel while he tried to pursue a diplomatic resolution to Tehran's nuclear ambitions. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the US Was not involved in the strikes against Tehran and warned Tehran not to target any American interests or personnel in the region. The Israeli airstrikes come just hours after a UN Watchdog said Iran had not disclosed the extent of nuclear material and activities at several locations. Jackie Northam, NPR News.

U.S. secretary of State Marco Rubio says Israel's attack on Iran was a unilateral decision. Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu says the preemptive airstrikes were launched because Iran's nuclear program poses a clear and present danger. Netanyahu advised Israelis to expect retaliation. The Israeli air force says it's already intercepted drones fired from Iran today. U.S. senator Alex Padilla was forcibly removed from a Los Angeles press event held by Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem yesterday. A video shows the California Democrat being pushed from the room, ordered to get on the floor and being handcuffed. Noem blames Padilla for the incident.
Unnamed Senator
I had a conversation with the senator after this. We sat down for 10 to 15 minutes and talked about the fact that nobody knew who he was. He didn't say who he was that until he was already had been lunging forward and people were trying to detain him for quite a period of time.

Padilla says he did identify himself, but was tackled while trying to ask Noem a question. A Republican House committee was grilled three Democratic governors on their state's immigration policies. As NPR's Brian Mann reports, GOP lawmakers say so called sanctuary policies make the country less safe.
James Comer
The House Oversight Committee was chaired by Kentucky Republican James Comer, who pointed to instances of violence by migrants.
Lauren Freyer
Military policies do not protect Americans. They protect criminal illegal aliens.
James Comer
Lawmakers sparred repeatedly with Democratic governors from Illinois, Minnesota and New York. They pointed out migrants commit crimes at lower rates than American citizens. Governor J.D. pritzker of Illinois described Trump's crackdown on migrants as a dangerous overreach.
J.B. Pritzker
ICE showed up in Chicago nearly immediately and began terrorizing our neighborhoods, our schools and parents.
James Comer
During the hearing, Democrats condemned Trump's mobilization of military units in Los Angeles. Republicans supported the deployment. Brian Mann, NPR News.

This is npr. An appeals court says President Trump may retain control of thousands of California National Guard members pending a hearing next week. The temporary decision blocks a lower court ruling that gave Trump until noon today to relinquish that control. Trump activated thousands of California Guard members over the objection of Governor Gavin Newsom to assist federal agents during immigration related protests. The death toll from the plane that crashed shortly after takeoff in India Thursday includes 241 people who are on the ground and dozens more 200 people on board the plane and dozens more on the ground. The BBC has spoken to the cousin of a British man who authorities say is the sole survivor. NPR's Lauren Freer has more from London.
Ajay Valgi

Nothing else.
Ajay Valgi
He just said he's fine, his cousin says, and that he was still searching for his brother who'd been in the seat next to him from his hospital bed. Ramesh told an Indian newspaper that, quote, 30 seconds after takeoff, there was a loud noise and the plane crashed. There were bodies all around me. I was scared. I stood up and ran, he was quoted as saying. Lauren Fryer, NPR News, London.

The episode opens with breaking news about significant developments in the Middle East. Iranian state television has reported that a high-ranking commander of Iran's armed forces has been killed in recent Israeli airstrikes.
Israel's Defense Minister, Israel Katz, asserted that the strikes were preemptive, anticipating possible retaliatory missile and drone attacks from Iran. "The Israeli attacks were not unexpected," Katz stated ([00:28]).
President Trump had previously waived an earlier Israeli strike, opting instead to seek a diplomatic path to address Tehran's nuclear ambitions.
U.S. Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, clarified that the United States was not involved in the strikes. He also issued a stern warning to Iran: “Do not target any American interests or personnel in the region” ([01:14]).
These airstrikes followed a UN watchdog's report indicating that Iran had not fully disclosed its nuclear materials and activities across several sites.

A dramatic incident unfolded at a press event hosted by Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, where U.S. Senator Alex Padilla was forcibly removed.
A video captured Padilla being pushed, ordered to the floor, and handcuffed during the event ([01:54]).
An unnamed senator recounted the ordeal: “We sat down for 10 to 15 minutes and talked about the fact that nobody knew who he was. He didn't say who he was until he had already been lunging forward and people were trying to detain him” ([02:08]).
Padilla defended himself, stating he did identify himself but was tackled while attempting to ask Secretary Noem a question.

The discussion shifts to domestic politics, focusing on a recent hearing by the House Oversight Committee led by Kentucky Republican James Comer.
James Comer criticized Democratic governors from Illinois, Minnesota, and New York for their sanctuary city policies, arguing that such policies make the country less safe by not adequately addressing illegal immigration.
Lauren Freyer, speaking for the Republicans, claimed that "Military policies do not protect Americans. They protect criminal illegal aliens" ([02:33]).
In response, Governor J.B. Pritzker of Illinois labeled the Trump administration's crackdown on migrants as "a dangerous overreach." He recounted, “ICE showed up in Chicago nearly immediately and began terrorizing our neighborhoods, our schools, and parents” ([02:55]).
The hearing also addressed the deployment of military units in Los Angeles amidst immigration protests. While Republicans supported Trump's actions, Democrats criticized the mobilization, emphasizing concerns over the militarization of law enforcement ([03:03]).
Timestamp: [03:12] - [03:59]
In a legal development, an appeals court has ruled that President Trump may retain control of thousands of California National Guard members pending an upcoming hearing.
This decision blocks a lower court's order, which had mandated that Trump relinquish control by noon on the day of the ruling ([03:12]).
The activation of the California National Guard was in response to immigration-related protests, a move opposed by Governor Gavin Newsom.
