Live from NPR News in Washington, I'm Jack Spear. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called on the Iranian people to, quote, stand up against the reg there. That's as Iran launches retaliatory missile strikes against Israel after Israeli attacks on Iranian nuclear facilities and military targets. NPR's Adil Al Shouji has more from Tel Aviv.
Benjamin Netanyahu
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told the Iranian people that Israel's attack on their country was clearing a path for them to, quote, achieve freedom.
The nation of Iran and the nation of Israel have been true friends since the days of Cyrus the Great. And the time has come for you to unite around your flag and your historic legacy by standing up for your freedom from an evil and oppressive regime.
In a video address, Netanyahu said that the Iranian regime does not know what hit them or what will hit them. Iran fired hundreds of missiles at Israel. Many were intercepted by Israel's air defense system, but some struck areas in Tel Aviv, wounding several people. Hadil Al Shalchi, NPR News, Tel Aviv.

The man was wrongly deported to a prison in El Salvador back in March marches pleaded not guilty to human smuggling charges in a Tennessee courtroom. Kilmar Abrego Garcia is a citizen of El Salvador who'd been living in Maryland when he was deported despite being under the protection of a court order. His case quickly became a rallying point for opposition to President Trump's mass deportation agenda. Albergo Garcia was returned to the US Last week to face criminal charges. His lawyers have braved questions about conflicts of interest in the case. Latest expansion of tariffs is coming for refrigerators, washing machines and other home appliances. The Trump administration is broadening the way it's applying steel and aluminum tariffs to level the playing field for domestic manufacturers. NPR's Lena Selyuk explains.
Lena Selyuk
Right now, a 50% tariff applies to raw steel and aluminum imported into the US and domestic manufacturers have long complained that this puts them at a disadvantage to foreign rivals because they have to pay this extra cost to import steel to make, say, a washing machine in the U.S. meanwhile, a foreign manufacturer can buy cheaper steel abroad, make the washer abroad, and import the finished machine, facing a much lower tariff. Now, starting June 23, that 50% tariff will start applying to steel and aluminum content inside some imported appliances. In addition, those appliances include washing machines, dryers, dishwashers, refrigerators with freezers, stoves and garbage disposals. NPR News.

Consumers are a bit more upbeat this month. It marks the first time in six months Americans view of the economy has improved as inflation stayed relatively contained. And the Trump administration appears to have reached at least the first framework of a China trade deal. A primary reading from the University of Michigan's Consumer Sentiment index showed a 16% jump, though the index remains at its lowest level in nearly 75 years. On Wall street, the Dow fell 769 points. This is NPR. Global warming is making a lot of people rethink how we build our homes and communities. From member station K1C, Ray Solomon reports. It's also changing how we take them apart.
Anna Perks
All the concrete, bricks, wood and asphalt in our buildings, houses, roads and bridges make up a big chunk of global greenhouse gas emissions. The growing deconstruction movement is trying to do better. Deconstruction contractor Anna Perks says her team doesn't just demolish old buildings, they take a systematic approach to unbuilding piece by piece.
Ray Solomon
Typically, what happens is a bulldozer will come in, just smash it all, it'll all get trashed. But deconstruction we tried to salvage and recycle as much as possible.
Anna Perks
She says deconstruction is step one in the circular economy of construction materials. Harvesting lumber, say from an old house rather than a forest, that saves the emissions it would take to make new materials from scratch. For NPR News, I'm Ray Solomon.

It may be a golfing record, though it's still going to have to be certified by the Guinness book, folks. A 35 hour long stint on a golf course in Long island that Kelechi Ezahai hopes will make it to the world record books. Ezahai teed off at the Huntington Crescent Club at 6:30pm Sunday, sank his final putt shortly after 5:30am on Tuesday. He was Flashlights and glowing golf balls after dark can also play through hours of rain. The Guinness Book says it will take some time, though, to determine if a new record indeed was set. Crude oil futures prices jumped today on the escalating conflicts between Israel and Iran. In the Middle east, oil made some of the biggest midday moves in years to end the session up more than 7.5% at $72.98 a barrel. In New York, I'm Jack Spear, NPR News, in Washington.

The episode opened with an update on the escalating tensions between Israel and Iran. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu addressed the Iranian populace, urging them to rise against their government amidst ongoing military conflicts.
Netanyahu’s Call to Iranians:
“The nation of Iran and the nation of Israel have been true friends since the days of Cyrus the Great. And the time has come for you to unite around your flag and your historic legacy by standing up for your freedom from an evil and oppressive regime” (00:43).
Impact of Missile Strikes:
Netanyahu highlighted recent retaliatory missile attacks by Iran on Israeli territories, stating, “The Iranian regime does not know what hit them or what will hit them” (01:11). While Israel's air defense intercepted many of the incoming missiles, some managed to strike Tel Aviv, resulting in injuries.

Expansion of U.S. Tariffs on Steel and Aluminum
The Trump administration announced an expansion of tariffs targeting steel and aluminum, aiming to support domestic manufacturers by leveling the playing field against foreign competitors.
Details of the Tariff Expansion:
Lena Selyuk explained, “Starting June 23, that 50% tariff will start applying to steel and aluminum content inside some imported appliances. In addition, those appliances include washing machines, dryers, dishwashers, refrigerators with freezers, stoves and garbage disposals” (02:13).
Economic Implications:
The new tariffs are intended to reduce the cost disparity that domestic manufacturers face when competing with foreign producers who can import steel at lower costs and manufacture appliances abroad. Global Warming and Sustainable Building Practices
Global warming is driving a transformation in how homes and communities are constructed and deconstructed. The segment featured Anna Perks, a deconstruction contractor, who discussed sustainable practices aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions from construction materials.
Deconstruction vs. Traditional Demolition:
Perks emphasized the importance of systematically unbuilding structures to salvage and recycle materials. “We take a systematic approach to unbuilding piece by piece,” she explained (03:49).
Circular Economy in Construction:
By harvesting materials like lumber from old buildings instead of sourcing new timber, the deconstruction movement supports a circular economy, significantly lowering the carbon footprint associated with new construction materials (03:58).
Ray Solomon of K1C reported on these innovative practices, highlighting their role in mitigating the environmental impact of the construction industry (03:31).
Attempt at a Golfing World Record
