In Washington, I'm Korva Coleman. Israel continues to launch significant military strikes against Iran today. These began overnight, targeting Iranian nuclear enrichment facilities. Three top Iranian generals have also been killed. Iran has fired scores of drones back at Israel. There are no reports of damage in Israel. President Trump is urging Iran to make a deal on its nuclear program after the Israeli attacks. As NPR's Franco Ortona reports, Trump says that he warned Iran that it will only get worse.
Franco Ordonez
In his first comment since Israel launched strikes on Iranian nuclear and military sites, Trump took to social media, where he said he told Tehran to make a deal before there is nothing left. Israel launched airstrikes into Iran Friday, killing top Iranian military leaders and nuclear scientists. The attacks targeting Iran's nuclear program are considered the biggest in decades and raise concerns of leading to a deadlier conflict. Trump told followers that he gave Iran chance after chance to make a deal on its nuclear program and warned that the alternative would be, quote, much worse than anything they know, anticipated or were told. Only one passenger survived yesterday's Air India plane crash in western India. 241 people aboard the plane were killed and others perished on the ground. The Boeing 787 Dreamliner crashed into the building of a medical college. The plane plunged and burned only seconds after taking off. NPR's Dia Hadid says authorities are trying to find out why.
Amit Singh
Right now there are Indian investigators on the case and British and American investigators are assisting. But we spoke to one safety expert, Amit Singh, who says even if there were issues with the airport or crew, there's a tendency to hide those problems. He says regulators and operators aren't working well together.

NPR's Dia Hadid reporting. An immigrant wrongly deported from the United States to El Salvador months ago is due in court today in the US the arraignment of Kilmar Abrego Garcia comes more than a month after the U.S. supreme Court ordered President Trump to facilitate his return. From member station wpln, Mariana Bacallo has more.
Mariana Bacallo
Prosecutors say that Kilmar Abrego Garcia is a member of the MS.13 gang and that for the past 11 years he's been moving people without legal status from Texas to Maryland. Garcia's attorney has said he's skeptical of the charges as his client's wrongful deportation has sparked criticism of the Trump administration's immigration policy. Garcia will be arraigned in Nashville because his charges stem from a 2022 traffic stop by the Tennessee Highway Patrol. For NPR News, I'm Mariana Bacallau in Nashville.

You're listening to NPR News from Washington. A federal appeals court has upheld President Trump's authority to federalize National Guard troops in California and deploy them in Los Angeles. He had done this to support federal immigration actions, but Trump disregarded California Governor Gavin Newsom, who had opposed the action, and the governor sued to stop Trump. A lower federal court initially agreed and said that Trump had to stop. But the federal appeals court temporarily stopped the lower court order. Now the appeals court has set a hearing for next Tuesday. It will examine whether Trump can deploy the National Guard in California against the wishes of nearly all California state and local officials. Global climate warming is making a lot of people rethink how we build our homes and communities. From member station kunc, Ray Solomon reports. It's also changing how we take them apart.

All the concrete, bricks, wood and asphalt in our buildings, houses, roads and bridges make up a big chunk of global greenhouse gas emissions. The growing deconstruction movement is trying to do better. Deconstruction contractor Anna Perks says her team doesn't just demolish old buildings, they take a systematic approach to unbuilding piece by piece.

Typically, what happens is a bulldozer will.
Amit Singh
Come in, smash it all, it'll all get trashed. But deconstruction, we tried to salvage and.
Mariana Bacallo
Recycle as much as possible.
Ray Solomon
She says deconstruction is step one in the circular economy of construction materials. Harvesting lumber, say, from an old house rather than a forest, that saves the emissions it would take to make new materials from scratch. For NPR News, I'm Ray Solomon.

A federal appeals court has upheld President Trump's authority to federalize National Guard troops in California, specifically deploying them in Los Angeles to support federal immigration enforcement. Key Points:
Notable Quote: Korva Coleman summarized, “It will examine whether Trump can deploy the National Guard in California against the wishes of nearly all California state and local officials” ([03:13]).

As global warming intensifies, there is a growing movement to rethink construction and demolition practices. The traditional approach of demolishing buildings with bulldozers contributes significantly to greenhouse gas emissions. In response, the deconstruction movement advocates for systematically dismantling structures to salvage and recycle materials, thereby reducing the environmental impact.
Key Points:
Notable Quote: Deconstruction contractor Anna Perks noted, “Deconstruction is step one in the circular economy of construction materials” ([04:11]).
