Live from NPR News, I'm Lakshmi Singh. The man accused of assassinating a Minnesota state lawmaker along with her husband and wounding another lawmaker over the weekend and is now facing federal charges. The FBI says Vance Belter has been moved to federal custody ahead of a court hearing this afternoon. U.S. attorney Joe Thompson says he's seen nothing in materials uncovered in Belter's belongings involving a, quote, political screed or a manifesto that would clearly identify motive for the deadly attacks.

Obviously, his primary motive was to go out and murder people. Now they were all elected officials. They were all Democrats. Beyond that, I think it's just way too speculative for anyone that's reviewed these materials to know and to say what was motivating him in terms of ideology.

Belter is facing murder and attempted murder state charges. In addition to the federal charges, President Trump has ordered officials in his administration to expand their deportation campaigns in largely Democratic led cities. NPR's Adrian Floddy. The reports Trump posted on social media that they should do all in their power to achieve his mass deportation goals.
Adrian Florido
ICE officers are here with ordered, Trump wrote on Truth Social, to detain and deport illegal aliens in America's largest cities such as Los Angeles, Chicago and New York. The president went on to accuse Democratic leaders in those and other cities of using immigrants without legal status to expand their voter base and to cheat in elections. There's never been evidence of this, but the president's post suggests that more than a week after ICE agents began aggressive raids in Los Angeles, setting off protests, the other large cities could soon expect the same. Trump wrote, quote, I have directed my entire administration to put every resource possible behind this effort. Adrienne Florido, NPR News, Los Angeles.

The New York Times is reporting the Department of Homeland Security will pause efforts to deport certain migrants. That includes migrants in agriculture and the hotel and restaurant industries. The Israeli military says it has taken control of the skies in western Iran to the capital to Israel and Iran are trading fire for a fourth day. The Iranian Ministry of Health says Israeli strikes have killed more than 200 people in Iran. Israeli officials say Iranian strikes have killed more than 20 in Israel. Here's NPR's Hadil Al Shalchi.

Israel's military said it now has, quote, aerial superiority over Iran's capital, Tehran. It said it has destroyed a third of the Iranian military's missile launchers, allowing Israeli forces to operate over Tehran without facing major threats. The Israeli military said that it had struck the command center of Iran's elite military Quds Force. The Quds Force is a subset of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps, which coordinates activities with Iranian allies. Iran has not responded to the Israeli military's claims. While President Trump said that the two sides needed to make a deal, he also told reporters that sometimes they have to fight it out. Hadil Al Shalchi, NPR News, tel Aviv.

You you're listening to NPR News. At the G7 summit in Canada today, President Trump confirmed to reporters that Iran has sent messages through intermediaries that it wants to de escalate the conflict with Israel. He added, they should have done that before. French President Emmanuel Macron is the latest US Ally to flatly oppose President Trump's ongoing desire to acquire Greenland. Yesterday, Macron toured a glacier, a hydroelectric power station and a Danish warship off the coast of Greenland in a semi autonomous Danish territory. He made public remarks stating plainly, quote, greenland is not to be sold. In Major League Baseball, Shohei Ohtani of the Los Angeles Dodgers is scheduled to pitch tonight for the first time in nearly two years. Steve Futterman reports Ohtani has been recovering from injury.
Steve Futterman
It is one of the most anticipated returns in many years. The last time Shohei Ohtani pitched was in September 2023, when he was still with the LA Angels. Ohtani suffered an elbow injury and underwent surgery last year. After leaving the Angels and joining the Dodgers, Ohtani still played, but only as a designated hitter. LA manager Dave Roberts on Sunday said this first pitching appearance will be very short.
Lakshmi Singh
I don't know if it's going to be one or two innings, but, you know, my guess is probably an inning to start.
Steve Futterman
Ohtani will be the Dodgers starter. During his time pitching with the Angels, Ohtani won 38 games. For NPR News, I'm Steve Futterman in Los Angeles.

The episode opens with a grave update from Minnesota, where Vance Belter has been arrested and charged with the assassination of a state lawmaker and her husband, along with the wounding of another lawmaker. Belter is now in federal custody awaiting a court hearing scheduled for the afternoon.
U.S. Attorney Joe Thompson commented on the investigation:
"We've seen nothing in the materials uncovered that includes a political screed or a manifesto that would clearly identify a motive for the deadly attacks."
[00:18]
Despite the lack of a clear ideological motive, Lakshmi Singh notes that Belter's actions targeted elected officials, all Democrats, suggesting a possible political motivation even if not explicitly documented. This case has heightened concerns about political violence and its underlying causes in the current climate.

President Donald Trump has intensified his administration's efforts to deport illegal immigrants, particularly in cities led by Democrats. This directive includes major metropolitan areas such as Los Angeles, Chicago, and New York.
Adrian Florido of NPR News reports:
"ICE officers are here with orders, Trump wrote on Truth Social, to detain and deport illegal aliens in America's largest cities such as Los Angeles, Chicago, and New York."
[01:25]
Trump further accused Democratic leaders of exploiting immigrants to bolster their voter bases and allegedly cheating in elections, despite the absence of evidence supporting these claims. He emphasized the administration's commitment:
"I have directed my entire administration to put every resource possible behind this effort."
[01:25]
However, the Department of Homeland Security plans to pause deportations for certain migrants working in critical industries like agriculture and hospitality, as reported by The New York Times. This pause indicates a potential shift or recalibration in immigration enforcement priorities.
