Live from NPR News in Washington, I'm Lakshmi Singh. Israeli leaders are vowing intensified action against Iran after the largest hospital in southern Israel was hit by missile. Local authorities say more than 200 people were wounded. Iranian state media say the missile was intended for a military site nearby. Meanwhile, China and Russia are calling for a ceasefire between Israel and Iran. Xi Jinping and Vladimir Putin held a phone call today. NPR's Emily Feng reports. The president say the situation is dangerous.

According to China's state news agency. Both leaders said the parties to the conflict, especially Israel, should cease fire as soon as possible. China has close ties with Iran. Its citizens can travel to Iran visa free, and thousands of its citizens work there in state oil companies, though many have evacuated after Israeli missile attacks on Tehran. China is also a major buyer of Iranian oil, and the two countries, along with Russia, just held joint military exercises this past spring in the Gulf of Oman, Iraq. Earlier this week, China's foreign minister had calls with both his counterparts in Iran and Israel and said Israel's attack on Iran's nuclear facilities set a, quote, dangerous precedent. President Trump has thrown the popular short video app TikTok another lifeline. NPR's John Ruich reports. He's asking the Department of Justice to continue not enforcing a law passed last year that requires the app's Chinese owner to sell it or for it to be shut down.
John Ruich
President Trump has signed an executive order giving TikTok a 90 day reprieve from enforcement of the law. This is his third such extension since he took office in January, although the other two were 75 days in length. It means TikTok will remain accessible to consumers in the United States and available on app stores until September 17th. Critics say the extensions ignore the national security risk that TikTok poses. The White House, meanwhile, has been trying to broker a deal for TikTok's Beijing based parent company B to sell a majority stake to a consortium of US Companies. In a statement posted online, TikTok said it's grateful for President Trump's leadership and support in ensuring that the app remains available to Americans and U.S. businesses. John Ruich, NPR News.

The president himself has taken very strong orders or has signed very strong executive orders on this, and we are grateful for Tennessee's efforts to protect our children. And we are grateful the Supreme Court ruled on the side of the law, but also on the side of protecting America's innocent children.

However, critics argue that laws in Tennessee and at least 24 other states discriminate against trans people, and they say the laws are unconstitutional. You're listening to NPR News. Hurricane Eric made landfall in southern Mexico this morning. It was a Category 3 storm at the time with top sustained winds of 125 mph. A SpaceX Starship rocket exploded last night during a test from its South Texas launch site. Texas Public Radio's Maria Navarro reports the incident resulted in a massive fireball.

SpaceX said on social media it experienced a, quote, major anomaly when its Starship rocket exploded while making preparations for its 10th flight test in Starbase Texas. The company says there were no injuries reported and all of its employees were accounted for. The explosion did not pose any hazards to residents in surrounding communities, and SpaceX says it worked with local officials in response to the incident. Starship's seventh and eighth test flights this year both resulted in explosions.

NPR News Now: June 19, 2025, 3 PM EDT – Comprehensive Summary
Hosted by Lakshmi Singh, NPR News Now delivers the latest updates across global and national headlines. This summary encapsulates the key discussions, insights, and conclusions from the June 19, 2025, episode.
Israeli Response to Missiles Targeting Southern Hospital At 00:25, host Lakshmi Singh reported that Israeli leaders have pledged intensified military action against Iran following a missile attack on the largest hospital in southern Israel. The strike resulted in over 200 injuries, marking a significant escalation in regional tensions. Iranian state media contends that the missile was intended for a nearby military installation, suggesting a complex motive behind the attack.
China and Russia Advocate for Ceasefire In a pivotal development, China and Russia are urging for an immediate ceasefire between Israel and Iran. According to Emily Feng at 00:59, President Xi Jinping of China and President Vladimir Putin of Russia engaged in a phone conversation where both leaders emphasized the urgency of halting hostilities:
“Both leaders said the parties to the conflict, especially Israel, should cease fire as soon as possible.”
Feng elaborates on China's strategic ties with Iran, highlighting visa-free travel for Chinese citizens, substantial Iranian oil purchases, and recent joint military exercises in the Gulf of Oman. China's Foreign Minister has criticized Israel’s actions, stating that attacks on Iran's nuclear facilities set a “dangerous precedent,” underscoring the delicate balance of international alliances in the region.
Extension of TikTok's U.S. Operations At 01:41, Lakshmi Singh introduced NPR's John Ruich, who detailed President Trump's decision to grant TikTok a 90-day reprieve from the enforcement of a law mandating the app's Chinese owner to divest or face shutdown in the United States. This extension, expiring on September 17th, marks Trump's third such delay, following previous extensions of 75 days each.
Criticism and White House Negotiations John Ruich highlighted that critics argue these extensions overlook the national security risks posed by TikTok. Meanwhile, the White House is actively seeking a resolution by attempting to broker a sale of TikTok's Chinese parent company, ByteDance, to a consortium of U.S. firms. In response, TikTok expressed gratitude for the administration’s support:
“We’re grateful for President Trump's leadership and support in ensuring that the app remains available to Americans and U.S. businesses.”
This maneuver reflects the ongoing tension between safeguarding national security and maintaining economic and social platforms integral to American users.
White House Applauds Supreme Court Decision At 02:38, Lakshmi Singh reported on the Supreme Court's ruling that supports Tennessee's enactment of a ban on certain gender-affirming medical treatments for transgender minors. Press Secretary Caroline Levitt, at 02:50, lauded the decision:
“The president himself has taken very strong orders or has signed very strong executive orders on this, and we are grateful for Tennessee's efforts to protect our children. And we are grateful the Supreme Court ruled on the side of the law, but also on the side of protecting America's innocent children.”
Critics' Opposition Despite the White House's approval, critics argue that the legislation discriminates against transgender individuals and violates constitutional protections. Laws like Tennessee's, alongside similar statutes in at least 24 other states, have sparked nationwide debates on civil rights and the appropriate extent of governmental intervention in personal medical decisions.
Hurricane Eric Makes Landfall in Southern Mexico Lakshmi Singh briefly covered the landfall of Hurricane Eric in southern Mexico, which struck as a Category 3 storm with sustained winds of 125 mph. The storm’s impact underscores the increasing frequency and intensity of hurricanes affecting the region.
SpaceX Starship Rocket Explosion In a concurrent technological incident, SpaceX experienced a major setback. At 03:07, Maria Navarro from Texas Public Radio reported that during a test for its Starship rocket at the South Texas launch site, a significant anomaly led to an explosion, resulting in a massive fireball. SpaceX confirmed:
“There were no injuries reported and all of its employees were accounted for. The explosion did not pose any hazards to residents in surrounding communities.”
This incident marks the eighth explosion in nine Starship test flights this year, highlighting the challenges faced in advancing space technology and the inherent risks of aerospace experimentation.
Transition in Ownership At 04:20, Lakshmi Singh announced that the Buss family is divesting its controlling interest in the Los Angeles Lakers. Jeanie Buss is expected to retain her role as team governor, continuing the legacy since her father’s acquisition of the team in 1979. Earlier discussions with NPR revealed the internal dynamics and familial challenges in maintaining the family-owned business, including conflicts such as the ousting of a sibling.
An unnamed speaker at 04:40 commented on the nature of business within the Buss family:
“If you're in business with them, these are the kind of things that happen. But at the end of the day, what brings you together as the team?”
Cultural Impact Jeanie Buss's prominence extends beyond the sports arena, with her life being parodied in the Netflix comedy Running Point, starring Kate Hudson, reflecting her significant cultural footprint.
Market Closure for Historical Commemoration Concluding the episode, Lakshmi Singh noted that the U.S. stock markets were closed on June 19th in observance of Juneteenth, a day commemorating the end of slavery in the United States. This closure reflects the nation's growing recognition of Juneteenth as a significant historical and cultural milestone.
