In Washington, I'm Korva Coleman. President Trump appears to be holding off for now on making a decision to authorize U.S. airstrikes against Iranian nuclear facilities. The potential attack comes as the conflict between Israel and Iran has sharply escalated over the past 24 hours. We've been following the ongoing situation out of Washington this morning. NPR's Windsor Johnston joins us live in the studio to talk about what we know so far. Windsor?
Windsor Johnston
Well, Korva, we still aren't clear on President Trump's next steps. When speaking to reporters at the White House yesterday, the president didn't offer many details about potentially joining Israel's campaign against Tehran.
Donald Trump
You don't know that I'm going to even do it. You don't know. I may do it. I may not do it. Nobody knows what I'm going to do. I can tell you this, that Iran's got a lot of trouble.
Windsor Johnston
Trump's comments really capture where things are right now. It appears the president is weighing a possible strike but has not made the call. But what we do know is that US Bombers and support aircraft are in place to support whatever decision that Trump ends up making. Now, as the conflict intensifies, lawmakers from both parties are really pushing the Trump administration for answers. Top Democrats in the Senate are demanding a strategy for dealing with Iran, saying the White House has left Congress in the dark as it weighs its next steps. They warn the escalating conflict could develop into a regional war and put thousands of American troops at risk. But right now it's basically wait and watch to see how the president plans to proceed.

NPR's Windsor Johnston reporting live. Thank you. Meanwhile, Israel carried out more strikes in Iran overnight. NPR's Daniel Estrin says one of them was against another Iranian nuclear site.
Daniel Estrin
One of the main targets, according to Israel, was the Iraq nuclear reactor. Now, Israeli military officials say the site was never operational, but they say it could be activated if Iranian leaders decide to do so. But we don't have clear reports from the ground in Iran.
Korva Coleman
NPR's Daniel Estrin reporting. One of the reasons that information from Iran is scarce is is because Iran blocked Internet access overnight. Iran also doesn't give details about most Israeli strikes. Separately, an Iranian missile struck a hospital in southern Israel. The Soroka Hospital is the largest medical facility in the city of Beersheva it has served as an emergency center for Israeli military casualties. The State Department says it will resume offering appointments to international students who want to study in the US but now Secretary of State Marco Rubio is telling agency officials to scrutinize the social media accounts of any international students who apply. He wants officials to look for any perceived anti Semitism or any perceived Hostility toward the U.S. this is NPR. This is Juneteenth. The federal holiday observes the day in 1865 when enslaved people in Texas were told they were free. Juneteenth celebrations at a church in Galveston, Texas, will include former President Joe Biden, who created the federal holiday. Rob Salinas has more.

It started with an idea.
Reverend Lynette Patterson
We had a thought that it's the 160th anniversary of Juneteenth. And who better to come and to be in attendance than the person that signed Juneteenth into a federal holiday?
Rob Salinas
Reverend Lynette Patterson is the pastor at Reedy Chapel in Galveston. She says the church sent a letter inviting former President Joe Biden to visit.
Reverend Lynette Patterson
After we heard about his health, concerned we were, you know, we were a little doubtful that he might come.
Rob Salinas
Months went by and no word on whether he would attend until a recent phone call.
Reverend Lynette Patterson
They called us, and I couldn't believe that it was actually his office calling. It's like, really?
Rob Salinas
I'm Rob Salinas in Houston.

Today will be a scorcher in the upper Plains. The National Weather Service has issued extreme heat watches from parts of Kansas and Iowa to Minnesota's northern border with Canada. Heat index values could rise above 100 degrees. Extreme heat warnings are posted for much of Southern Arizona and parts of California. The National Weather Service is tracking Hurricane Eric in the Pacific Ocean. It's very close to Mexico's southern Pacific coast. Top sustained winds are at 140 miles per hour, making it a very dangerous Category 4 storm. Forecasters say Eric will likely make landfall and in the next few hours. I'm Korva Coleman, NPR News.
