Live from NPR News. In Washington, I'm Korva Coleman. The White House is weighing its options as President Trump continues to hold off on any decision to strike Iran. The possibility of US Involvement in Israel's campaign against Iran could comes after the Israeli military launched airstrikes on Iranian military sites and Iran responded with missile attacks in southern Israel. NPR's Windsor Johnson has been following developments and joins us live here in the studio.

Windsor, Korva, even with rising tensions and military action on both sides, there's still a question hanging over all of this. Is there any room at this point for a diplomatic resolution? Some officials have warned that the situation could spark, but others say there may be still some time to pull back to ease tensions. I spoke with Alex Vatanka, a senior fellow at the Middle east institute in Washington, D.C. this morning, and he told me that diplomatic channels are still open.
Alex Vatanka
Ali Khamenei, the supreme leader of Iran, his speech yesterday, he didn't shut the door when it comes to diplomacy, but he could have spoken much more forcefully about his desire to be ready to sort of make the sort of bigger compromises that it takes for President Trump and Netanyahu to say they achieve the objective of essentially forcing Iran to stand up. We didn't hear that from Khamenei yesterday. It was more of a, you know, a speech of we will fight to the end if that's what we have to do.
Windsor Johnston
And while diplomacy may still be on the table here, so is military force. US Aircraft and support systems are said to be in place in the region, giving President Trump the option to act quickly if he chooses. But again, right now the president hasn't given any indication of what his next steps might be.

NPR's Windsor Johnston Live in the studio. Russian President Vladimir Putin says the Kremlin can broker peace talks between Israel and Russia's ally, Iran. Putin's comments came on the sidelines of an annual economic forum in Russia's second city of St. Petersburg. From St. Petersburg, NPR's Charles Mainz has details.
Charles Maynes
Speaking to journalists, Putin said Israeli strikes had failed to destroy Iran's nuclear facilities underground and called for renewed diplomatic efforts to stop the fighting. The Russian leader stressed that despite a strategic partnership with Iran, the agreement with Tehran was not a mutual defense pact. Neither, Putin said had Iran asked for military aid. Instead, Russia has offered to mediate the conflict with Putin, saying he felt an agreement that secured both Iran's civilian nuclear program and Israel's security could be found. He Yet President Trump has dismissed the Russian initiative, saying he told Putin in a recent conversation to instead focus on ending the war in Ukraine. Charles Maynes, NPR News, St. Petersburg.

Stock markets are closed today on this federal holiday of Juneteenth. You're listening to NPR News. The private company SpaceX is investigating what happened last night when one of its rockets exploded. It was undergoing a test when it went up in a massive fireball. NPR's Ryland Barton reports. SpaceX says there were no injuries.

SpaceX says its Starship rocket experienced a major anomaly while it was on the test stand. A gigantic ball of flames can be seen stretching into the sky, according to NASASpaceflight.com which livestreamed the test. SpaceX says there are no dangers to residents of surrounding communities and asked people to not approach the area. The testing site is located in the city of Starbase on the Texas coast. The city was created earlier this year after SpaceX employees who live near the site voted to incorporate it. The Texas Legislature recently gave the the power to shut down the local beach for SpaceX launches. Ryland Barton, NPR News.

A federal judge in Texas has overturned a Biden Era policy that strengthened privacy protections for women seeking abortions. The decision says the rule wrongly limits states and their public health laws. The Biden Era rule had blocked health care providers and insurance companies from giving information to law enforcement about legal abortion procedures. That would be in the case when officers want to investigate someone else involved in connection with the legal abortion. The National Hurricane center says that Hurricane Eric has now made landfall on the southern Pacific coast of Mexico. Top sustained winds are 125 miles per hour. That makes Hurricane Eric a dangerous Category 3 storm. I'm Korva Coleman, NPR News, in Washington.

NPR News Now – June 19, 2025, 8 AM EDT
NPR’s “News Now” delivers the latest headlines in five minutes. Hosted by Korva Coleman, this summary captures the key discussions, insights, and developments from the June 19, 2025 episode.
Host Introduction
Korva Coleman opens the episode from Washington, highlighting the precarious situation as President Trump deliberates on potential strikes against Iran. The backdrop includes recent Israeli airstrikes on Iranian military sites and retaliatory missile attacks by Iran targeting southern Israel.
Diplomatic vs. Military Responses
Windsor Johnston provides a nuanced analysis of the ongoing crisis:
“Is there any room at this point for a diplomatic resolution?” (00:42)
Johnston discusses the divided perspectives among officials. While some fear an imminent escalation, others believe there’s still an opportunity to de-escalate. He references his conversation with Alex Vatanka, a senior fellow at the Middle East Institute, who offers deeper insights.
Expert Insight from Alex Vatanka
Vatanka elaborates on Iran’s stance:
“Ali Khamenei...didn't shut the door when it comes to diplomacy, but he could have spoken much more forcefully about his desire to be ready to sort of make the sort of bigger compromises...” (01:16)
He critiques Supreme Leader Khamenei's recent speech for lacking a commitment to substantial compromise, instead presenting a defiant posture against external pressures from the US and Israel.
Military Options Remain Open
Johnston further emphasizes the military dimension:
“US Aircraft and support systems are said to be in place in the region, giving President Trump the option to act quickly if he chooses.” (01:48)
Despite the readiness, President Trump has yet to signal his intended course of action, keeping both diplomatic and military avenues on the table.
Putin Steps In
Korva Coleman transitions to international developments, noting Russian President Vladimir Putin’s offer to mediate peace talks between Israel and Iran. This announcement was made during an economic forum in St. Petersburg.
Detailed Report by Charles Maynes
Charles Maynes expands on Putin’s proposal:
“Putin said Israeli strikes had failed to destroy Iran's nuclear facilities underground and called for renewed diplomatic efforts to stop the fighting.” (02:29)
Maynes clarifies that while Russia maintains a strategic partnership with Iran, it does not extend to a mutual defense pact. Putin advocates for a balanced agreement that ensures Iran’s civilian nuclear program's security alongside Israel’s safety.
US Response
However, President Trump has dismissed Russia’s initiative:
“He told Putin in a recent conversation to instead focus on ending the war in Ukraine.” (02:54)
This dismissal underscores the strained US-Russia relations, particularly in the context of ongoing conflicts elsewhere.
Incident Overview
Korva Coleman shifts focus to the private sector, reporting a significant event in the aerospace industry. SpaceX experienced a major anomaly during a Starship rocket test, resulting in a massive explosion.
Report by Ryland Barton
Ryland Barton provides vivid details of the incident:
“A gigantic ball of flames can be seen stretching into the sky...” (03:29)
The test, conducted at the newly incorporated city of Starbase on the Texas coast, concluded without injuries. SpaceX assures the public of their safety measures, urging residents to avoid the area.
Contextual Background
Starbase was established earlier in the year by SpaceX employees seeking to manage the company’s expansive launch activities. Recent legislative actions by the Texas Legislature have empowered local authorities to regulate launch-related activities, including beach closures near the testing site.
Judicial Decision Breakdown
Korva Coleman reports a pivotal legal development in Texas:
“A federal judge in Texas has overturned a Biden-era policy that strengthened privacy protections for women seeking abortions.” (04:06)
The ruling challenges the previous administration’s regulations, asserting that it improperly restricted states’ abilities to enforce their public health laws. The Biden-era rule had previously prevented healthcare providers and insurers from sharing information about legal abortion procedures with law enforcement, safeguarding patient confidentiality.
Implications
This decision could significantly impact how abortion-related information is handled, potentially increasing the involvement of state authorities in overseeing legal medical procedures.
Storm Details
The National Hurricane Center updates listeners on Hurricane Eric:
“Hurricane Eric has now made landfall on the southern Pacific coast of Mexico. Top sustained winds are 125 miles per hour.” (04:06)
Categorized as a dangerous Category 3 storm, Eric poses substantial risks to affected regions, including strong winds, heavy rainfall, and potential flooding. Preparations and emergency responses are likely underway to mitigate the storm’s impact on communities.
