Live from NPR News in Washington, I'm Dave Mattingley. President Trump says he'll decide within the next two weeks whether the US Will join Israel's military operation against Iran aimed at eliminating Tehran's nuclear threat. That's according to White House Press Secretary Caroline Levitt. Speaking to reporters yesterday at the White House, NPR's Jane Arafin Amman reports on a reaction in the Middle east to Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz threatening Iran's supreme leader.
Jane Arafin Amman
This region is extremely rattled by those renewed Israeli threats to kill the supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz put it this way. He said the Israel military had been instructed and knows that in order to achieve all of its goals, this man absolutely should not continue to exist.

The threat followed Iranian missile strikes in Israel yesterday, including ones that hit a high rise apartment building in Tel Aviv and another that struck a hospital in southern Israel. This is the eighth day of fighting between Israel and Iran. In Geneva today, Iran's foreign minister is scheduled to meet with his counterparts from Britain, France and Germany to discuss Tehran's nuclear program and efforts to end the Israeli attacks. A federal appeals court in California says President Trump can continue deploying National Guard troops to Los Angeles in a unanimous order. The 9th US Circuit Court of Appeals says the president does not have to return control of the National Guard to governor Gavin Newsom. The governor had sued, arguing the president exceeded his authority when he deployed thousands of Guard troops to L A after protests broke out over federal immigration raids targeting those in the US without legal status. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney says new tariffs on imports of U.S. steel and aluminum will go into effect on July 21. Dan Karpenschuk has more.
Dan Karpenschuk
Carney would not say what the new tariffs would be, but July 21st coincides with the end of the 30 day deadline for a trade deal that was mentioned when Carney and President Trump met on the sidelines of the G7. Carney also says Ottawa will limit federal procurement policies to favor Canadian suppliers and what he describes as reliable trading partners. And he will announce new retroactive tariff quota rates on imports of steel products from non Free Trade Agreement countries. They will be at 100% of the 2024 levels. There will also be task forces for steel and aluminum to help guide the government's decision making. Earlier this month, President Trump doubled existing tariffs on steel and aluminum to 50%. For NPR News, I'm Dan Karpenchuk in Toronto.

There's widespread damage in areas of southern Mexico from Hurricane Eric. It made landfall yesterday as a major Category 3 storm, causing flooding and mudslides. This is NPR News from Washington. The National Weather Service is warning of extreme heat in much of the US over the next few days. Heat advisories, watches and warnings extend from Arizona to New Jersey and include much of the upper Midwest. Minneapolis and Green Bay, Wisconsin, are among the cities expecting afternoon highs in the 90s on Saturday and Sunday. President Trump's shrinking of the federal workforce is changing longstanding norms in civil service. NPR's Andrea Hsu reports.

President Trump has long talked of dismantling what he calls the deep state. He says there are too many people in the government intent on obstructing his policies and goals. Now his administration is taking steps to convert tens of thousands of civil servants into at will employees, those whose jobs are policy influencing. The administration says doing so will ensure that Trump can carry out the work the American people elected him to do. His critics say Trump is trying to politicize the federal workforce. They warn if civil servants can be fired based on political whim, the government will lose the expertise it needs to run the country and the American people would suffer. And Andrea Hsu, NPR News.

Released: June 20, 2025
President Donald Trump has indicated that he will decide within the next two weeks whether the United States will join Israel’s military operations against Iran, which are aimed at neutralizing Tehran's nuclear capabilities. White House Press Secretary Caroline Levitt shared this information with reporters, emphasizing the administration’s deliberative approach to the escalating tensions in the region.
The Middle East remains highly unsettled following renewed threats from Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz against Iran's Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. In a recent statement, Katz declared, “[...] the Israeli military had been instructed and knows that in order to achieve all of its goals, this man absolutely should not continue to exist” (00:46). This aggressive rhetoric follows a series of Iranian missile strikes targeting Israel, including attacks on a high-rise apartment building in Tel Aviv and a hospital in southern Israel, marking the eighth consecutive day of conflict between the two nations.
Amidst the ongoing hostilities, Iran's Foreign Minister is scheduled to meet with counterparts from Britain, France, and Germany in Geneva. The discussions will focus on Tehran's nuclear program and strategies to cease Israeli military actions, aiming to de-escalate the volatile situation.
A federal appeals court in California has ruled unanimously that President Trump may continue deploying National Guard troops to Los Angeles. The 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals dismissed Governor Gavin Newsom’s lawsuit, which contended that the President exceeded his authority by sending thousands of Guard troops to manage protests against federal immigration raids targeting undocumented individuals (01:10). This decision reinforces the federal government's authority in deploying military resources during domestic disturbances.
President Trump's administration is undertaking significant changes to the federal workforce, aiming to convert tens of thousands of civil servants into at-will employees. NPR's Andrea Hsu reports that this move is part of Trump's broader strategy to dismantle what he refers to as the "deep state," alleging that entrenched government employees are obstructing his policies. The administration argues that this restructuring will streamline operations and better align the workforce with the President’s objectives. However, critics warn that politicizing the federal workforce could lead to a loss of essential expertise, potentially undermining government functionality and public service quality (03:45).
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced that new tariffs on U.S. steel and aluminum imports will take effect on July 21. Although specific tariff rates were not disclosed, Carney highlighted that this date aligns with the expiration of a 30-day deadline for a previously discussed trade deal between Canada and the U.S. during the G7 summit. Additionally, Ottawa plans to restrict federal procurement policies to favor Canadian suppliers and "reliable trading partners." Retroactive tariff quota rates on steel imports from non-Free Trade Agreement countries will be set at 100% of 2024 levels. The Canadian government will also establish task forces for steel and aluminum sectors to inform future policy decisions. This move follows President Trump’s earlier decision to double existing tariffs on steel and aluminum to 50% (01:10; 02:16).
Hurricane Eric made landfall in southern Mexico as a Category 3 storm, leading to extensive flooding and mudslides. The affected regions are grappling with widespread damage and ongoing recovery efforts (03:00).
The National Weather Service has issued heat advisories, watches, and warnings covering a vast portion of the United States, from Arizona to New Jersey, including much of the Upper Midwest. Cities like Minneapolis and Green Bay, Wisconsin, are expected to experience afternoon temperatures reaching the 90s Fahrenheit on Saturday and Sunday (03:00).
The NBA Finals saw a pivotal moment as the Indiana Pacers defeated the Oklahoma City Thunder 108-91 in Game Six, evening the series at three games apiece. The decisive Game Seven is scheduled for Sunday night in Oklahoma City, promising a thrilling conclusion to the championship series (04:27).
Wall Street futures are trending lower this morning in anticipation of the market's return after being closed yesterday for the Juneteenth holiday. Investors are closely monitoring developments and preparing for the reopening of trading (04:27).
