The White House said the American bombers dropped the bunker bust bombs at the Iranian Fordo, Eskan and Nataz sites. President Trump made the announcement Saturday Evening just before 8pm Eastern Time on social media and within the hour he spoke from the East Room at the White House.
President Trump
Our objective was the destruction of Iran's nuclear enrichment capacity and a stop to the nuclear threat posed by the world's number one state sponsor of terror. Tonight, I can report to the world that the strikes were a spectacular military success.
Dan Ronan
The decision to join Israel comes after more than a week of attacks by Israel, which launched a surprise attack on Iranian facilities. But Israel and others said the United States was the only nation to have the 30,000 pound weapon which had the best chance of destroying Iran's heavily fortified sites which were buried deeply underground. The Los Angeles Dodgers say they will give $1 million to help the city, its immigrant population. NPR's Elena Wise has more.

The Dodgers had been silent for weeks on the ongoing immigration raids that have rocked Southern California and sparked anti ICE protests in the area. Though on Thursday the Dodgers said they turned ICE away when the agency came to the team stadium and asked for access to its parking lots, ICE denied that his agents had been there. The next day, the Dodgers announced their donation plan and said it would a leading role in standing up for the families affected. President Trump has said he wants to enact the largest mass deportation in history. He has said ICE and other agencies should continue to target Los Angeles and other cities with Democratic leadership. Alana Wise, NPR News.

Mayan Silver
Heat indices across the Midwest are expected to get up to 103 to 109 degrees. The heat index couples actual air temperature with the humidity, which can make it feel very soupy outside. Meteorologist Ben Sheppard is with the National Weather Service.

We are urging people to limit their time spent outdoors and never leave kids or pets unattended in vehicles. And in the event you do need to go outside to stay hydrated and take breaks as often as possible.

Neta Ulabi
Believe it or not, it seems attention spans have gotten longer. The average YouTube user spends more than half their time watching videos that are longer than 20 minutes, like this comedy series called the Messy Group Chat.
Oh, I know that. Wig off Amazon.
Each episode is about half an hour, about the same as an old fashioned TV sitcom. And as it happens, according to a company called Tubular Labs, which tracks YouTube viewership, this trend coincides with another one more people, about 40% right now are watching YouTube on their televisions. NPR News Now: Episode Summary – June 21, 2025
Released on June 22, 2025
NPR News Now's latest episode, aired on June 21, 2025, delivers a comprehensive overview of significant national and international events. This summary encapsulates the key discussions, insights, and conclusions presented during the episode, organized into clear sections for ease of understanding.
[00:14] Dan Ronan reports a pivotal development in U.S.-Iran relations as the United States military conducts airstrikes on three Iranian nuclear facilities—Fordo, Eskan, and Nataz. This action aligns the U.S. with Israel's ongoing attacks against Iran, marking a direct escalation in the regional conflict.
[00:45] President Trump announced the strikes, declaring, “Our objective was the destruction of Iran's nuclear enrichment capacity and a stop to the nuclear threat posed by the world's number one state sponsor of terror. Tonight, I can report to the world that the strikes were a spectacular military success.” His statement underscores the administration's commitment to neutralizing perceived nuclear threats.
[01:05] Dan Ronan elaborates that the U.S. decision to join Israel's campaign follows over a week of Israel-led attacks on Iranian sites. The U.S. utilized a formidable 30,000-pound bunker-buster bomb, deemed the most effective available for targeting Iran's deeply buried and fortified infrastructures.
[04:05] An update reiterates the gravity of the situation, highlighting that Iran's Atomic Energy Agency condemns the attacks as violations of international norms while asserting their nuclear capabilities remain uncompromised.
[01:33] Alana Wise reports that the Los Angeles Dodgers have pledged $1 million to aid the city's immigrant population. This move comes in response to recent immigration raids that have ignited anti-ICE protests across Southern California.
The Dodgers had previously remained silent on the issue but took a stand after an incident where they allegedly turned away ICE agents seeking access to their stadium parking lots—a claim ICE denied. The team emphasized their role in supporting affected families, countering President Trump’s aggressive stance on mass deportations. Trump has openly advocated for intensified ICE operations in cities with Democratic leadership, including Los Angeles.
[02:14] Dan Ronan highlights an impending weather crisis as a heat dome threatens to blanket the Midwest weekend, potentially subjecting millions to oppressive temperatures and high humidity levels.
[02:27] Mayan Silver details forecasts predicting heat indices soaring between 103 to 109 degrees Fahrenheit. Meteorologist Ben Sheppard advises, “We are urging people to limit their time spent outdoors and never leave kids or pets unattended in vehicles. And in the event you do need to go outside to stay hydrated and take breaks as often as possible.” The heatwave is expected to persist through Monday before shifting eastward towards the Atlantic coast.
[03:07] Dan Ronan discusses the evolving landscape of digital media consumption, focusing on YouTube's sustained popularity with over 120 million daily viewers.
[03:28] Neta Ulabi observes a shift in viewer behavior, noting, “Believe it or not, it seems attention spans have gotten longer. The average YouTube user spends more than half their time watching videos that are longer than 20 minutes, like this comedy series called the Messy Group Chat.” She adds that approximately 40% of viewers now access YouTube content via televisions, aligning with trends reported by Tubular Labs.
This evolution suggests a convergence of online platforms with traditional viewing experiences, potentially reshaping content creation and distribution strategies.
[04:05] Dan Ronan reports a tragic incident in North Dakota, where a tornado caused significant damage and resulted in the deaths of three individuals in Enderland, approximately 40 miles southwest of Fargo. The tornado's impact underscores the severe weather challenges the region faces, complementing the earlier discussion on the Midwest heat dome.
This episode of NPR News Now provides listeners with timely updates on critical issues ranging from international military actions and social community support to severe weather events and shifts in digital media consumption patterns.
