Keir Starmer has called on Iran to return to the negotiating table in the wake of the US Strikes. In a written statement, the British prime minister also says Iran can never be allowed to develop a nuclear weapon and the US has taken taken action to alleviate that threat. As recently as Thursday, Starmer had called on President Trump not to risk escalating the crisis by launching military action, insisting that negotiations were the best way to resolve the crisis over Tehran's nuclear program. British Foreign Secretary David Lammy has urged Iran to show restraint following the U.S. strikes. For NPR News, I'm Vicki Barker in London.

The ICRC says that they have delegations in both Iran and Israel and are mobilizing teams and supplies to scale up to address increasing needs. They say medical personnel and first responders must be allowed to carry out their life saving work safely. And they say the intensification and spread of major military operations in the Middle east risk engulfing the region and the world in a war with irreversible consequences. So a pretty dire warning there from the International Committee of the Red Cross.

In the early hours of June 22, 2025, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth announced the successful execution of U.S. airstrikes targeting three Iranian nuclear sites. Speaking at a Pentagon briefing at [00:25], Hegseth declared, “For the entirety of his time in office, President Trump has consistently stated for over 10 years that Iran must not get a nuclear weapon, full stop. Thanks to President Trump's bold and visionary leadership and his commitment to peace through strength, Iran's nuclear ambitions have been obliterated” ([00:35]).
However, the immediate aftermath remains uncertain, as an independent damage assessment has yet to be conducted. Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman General Dan Kaine noted it is “too early to say if Iran still has nuclear capability” ([00:57]). Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Al Rakshi, speaking from Istanbul at [01:14], condemned the strikes, stating, “While President Trump was elected on a platform of putting an end to America's costly involvement of forever wars in our part of the world, he has betrayed not only Iran by abusing our commitment to diplomacy, but also deceived his own voters by submitting to the wishes of a wanted war criminal” ([01:16]).
Internationally, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has implicitly supported the U.S. actions while simultaneously encouraging Iran to return to the negotiating table. In a statement, Starmer emphasized, “Iran can never be allowed to develop a nuclear weapon and the US has taken action to alleviate that threat” ([01:46]). He had previously urged President Trump to avoid escalating the crisis militarily, advocating for negotiations as the optimal path forward ([01:46]). British Foreign Secretary David Lammy also called on Iran to exercise restraint following the strikes ([01:46]).
United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres voiced concerns over the potential fallout, warning that the strikes “risk catastrophic consequences in the Middle East” ([02:28]). Additionally, Mark Loewen from the BBC reported on the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) mobilizing resources in both Iran and Israel, stating, “The intensification and spread of major military operations in the Middle East risk engulfing the region and the world in a war with irreversible consequences” ([02:41]).
On June 22, 2025, Texas Republican Governor Greg Abbott signed into law a measure requiring all public school classrooms to display the Ten Commandments ([03:21]). This legislation swiftly passed the Republican-controlled state legislature earlier in the month. The law aligns Texas with two other states pursuing similar mandates; however, Louisiana's attempt was blocked by a federal appeals court ([03:34]), and Arkansas faces ongoing legal challenges ([03:36]).
Supporters argue that the Ten Commandments are foundational to the country’s heritage, asserting, “The Commandments are a part of the country's foundation” ([03:44]). Critics, however, contend that the law violates the separation of church and state, a principle upheld in previous court rulings.
In collegiate sports news, the LSU Tigers clinched their spot in the NCAA baseball championship with a decisive victory over Coastal Carolina University ([03:47]). The Tigers swept through the super regional, advancing to the College World Series in Omaha. LSU’s starting pitcher, Kate Anderson, delivered an outstanding performance, pitching a complete game shutout and striking out ten batters ([04:04]).
Speaking about the game, Anderson, a sophomore from Madisonville, Louisiana, remarked, “It felt like home when I threw my first pitch in the 97-degree heat” ([04:19]). Her teammate, Steven Milam, credited the supportive environment, stating, “Growing up here, this was honestly not nearly as bad as what it was in the super regional” ([04:19]). The Tigers scored their sole run in the opening inning, thanks to Milam’s single up the middle ([04:27]). Greg Eklund of NPR News highlighted the team's resilience and teamwork as key factors in their success ([04:27]).
The NBA Finals have reached a thrilling climax with the Indiana Pacers and the Oklahoma City Thunder tied at three games each in the best-of-seven series ([04:44]). Tonight’s Game 7 will determine the championship winner, marking a highly anticipated conclusion to the season. Fans and analysts alike are eagerly awaiting the decisive match, anticipating high-stakes gameplay and memorable performances.
