Live from NPR News in Washington, I'm Dave Mattingly. Diplomats at the UN are calling for dialogue in response to US Military strikes on three Iranian nuclear sites, including the Fordeau and Natanz facilities. The weekend attacks involved bunker buster bombs dropped from B2 stealth bombers and Tomahawk missiles launched from a Navy submarine. NPR's Michelle Kellerman says Iran is rejecting calls for diplomacy now that the US has joined Israel in attacking the country.

Iran's ambassador to the United nations accuses the US of helping Israel with its, quote, dirty work and vowed that Iran will respond to the targeting of its nuclear facilities. UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres is calling for restraint to avoid sinking into, as he puts it, a rat hole of retaliation after retaliation. The head of the UN's nuclear watchdog, Rafael Grossi, says the region needs peace.
Rafael Grossi (1:13)
The nuclear non proliferation regime that has underpinned international security for more than half a century is on the line.

On the Sunday talk shows, Vice President Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio made the case for the Trump administration. Vance told NBC's Meet the Press america is at war with Iran's nuclear program, not the country. Rubio said much the same to CBS has faced the Nation, describing the attack as a move to degrade or destroy three nuclear sites. Rich Rubio said it was not an attack on the Iranian people. Democratic lawmakers in Congress are largely criticizing President Trump for joining the Israeli military operation against Iran, as is Republican Congressman Thomas Massie of Kentucky, who says Trump should have first gotten the approval of Congress. This is the last full day of campaigning before tomorrow's New York Democratic mayoral primary. Elizabeth Kim with member station WNYC reports on how the two leading candidates are trying to redefine their party.

Andrew Cuomo is seeking to make a historic political comeback. The 67 year old moderate Democrat and former governor resigned in 2021amid sexual misconduct allegations. His main rival is zoran Mamdani, a 33 year old state lawmaker and Democratic socialist who's focused on the issue of affordability. Both are pitching a bigger vision of how Democrats can win back working class voters. Cuomo has assembled a traditional coalition backed by UN and older liberal voters. Mamdani is running a grassroots campaign that's attracted younger and progressive voters. He would be the city's first Muslim and Asian American mayor. For NPR News, I'm Elizabeth Kim.
