Live from NPR News, I'm Giles Snyder. President Trump is due to board Air Force One in a few hours. He's heading to the Netherlands for the 76th NATO Summ. His visit there with European allies comes as tensions have escalated between the U.S. and Iran. NPR's Deepa Shivaram reports.

Trump will head to the Hague the day after Iran tried to strike a US Air base in Qatar. No one was harmed or killed. That strike was in response to the US Hitting three nuclear targets in Iran over the weekend. But as Trump heads to NATO, the focus there is on a different Russia's continued war in Ukraine. The alliance is trying to commit to nations spending 5% of their GDP on defense in the next 10 years. That's a jump from the current mandate of 2%. It's a proposal Trump has been calling for for years as he tries to get other countries to contribute what he says is their fair share to NATO. Deepa Shivaram, NPR News.

Both Israel and Iran have now publicly agreed to a ceasefire. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu says Israel has achieved its war goals. The the acceptance by both sides came after a final flurry of Israeli airstrikes and Iranian missile attacks. President Trump announced the truce hours ago and in a social media post urged both sides not to violate it. Vice President J.D. vance says President Trump wants to build a long term settlement between Iran and Israel.

What the Iranians have showed through their support of terror networks, through their now failed effort to build a nuclear weapon is that they're just not very good at war. And I think the president really hit the reset button and said, look, let's actually produce long term peace for the region.

And speaking there in a Fox News interview after President Trump's ceasefire announcement, stocks gained and oil prices fell even after Iran launched missiles against a U.S. air base in Qatar. There were no injuries reported. NPR's Rafael Nam has more.

It was not the reaction most investors had expected. Stocks gained instead of slumping even after the US Attacked nuclear facilities in Iran over the weekend. That's because investors are still hoping tensions will ease. Iran retaliated, but its attack against the US Base in Qatar produced no casualties. Meanwhile, oil prices actually slumped. Traders have mainly determined that oil prices have already gained enough since earlier this month when Israel started attacking Iran. Of course, things could change in a heartbeat, and investors will remain cautious overall. But for now, financial markets are taking things in stride. Rafael Nam, NPR News.

Asian markets are rallying in Tuesday trading after President Trump announced that Iran and Israel have agreed to that ceasefire. Japan's benchmark Nikkei is advancing. And oil prices have fallen further as fears ease that Iran could try to shut down the Strait of Hormuz. This is NPR News. A new generation of obesity medicines is in the works. A study shows promising results for an experimental pill that works like the blockbusters Ozempic and Wegovy. NPR Sidney Lupkin has more.

Eli Lilly is developing a pill called Orphaglipron. In a study of patients with type 2 diabetes, it lowered blood sugar. Patients on the highest dose lost an average of 16 pounds. The results were published in the New England Journal of Medicine. The study compared the experimental pills to placebo, followed more than 550 people and lasted 40 weeks. Some patients experienced gastrointestinal issues when they increased their doses, but no episodes of low blood sugar called hypoglycemia. This was not a head to head study of Orphaglipron compared to already approved injectable obesity drugs like Novo Nordisk Wegovy, but the safety and effectiveness appear to be similar. Eli Lilly says it plans to submit or for Gliparon for regulatory approval for obesity by the end of the year. Sidney Lupkin, NPR News.

President Trump's NATO Engagement Amidst Rising Tensions
At the outset of the episode, Giles Snyder announces President Trump’s imminent departure aboard Air Force One to attend the 76th NATO Summit in The Hague. This visit underscores the heightened tensions between the United States and Iran.
Deepa Shivaram elaborates on the geopolitical context: “Trump will head to the Hague the day after Iran tried to strike a US air base in Qatar. No one was harmed or killed” (00:39). This Iranian strike was retaliatory, following the U.S. hitting three nuclear targets in Iran over the previous weekend. As Trump participates in the NATO summit, the primary agenda shifts to Russia’s ongoing conflict in Ukraine. A significant point of discussion is the NATO alliance’s proposal to increase member nations' defense spending commitment from the current 2% of GDP to 5% over the next decade. Trump has been a staunch advocate for this increase, urging other NATO members to contribute what he deems their “fair share” to the alliance’s collective defense (00:39).
Ceasefire Reached Between Israel and Iran
Giles Snyder reports a significant development in Middle Eastern geopolitics: both Israel and Iran have publicly agreed to a ceasefire. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared, “Israel has achieved its war goals” (01:16). This agreement follows a series of intense Israeli airstrikes and Iranian missile attacks. President Trump announced the truce and emphasized the importance of maintaining it through a social media post, urging both nations to adhere strictly to the ceasefire terms.
Vice President J.D. Vance commented on the administration’s objectives: “President Trump wants to build a long-term settlement between Iran and Israel” (01:16). An unnamed analyst provided further insight, stating, “What the Iranians have showed through their support of terror networks, through their now failed effort to build a nuclear weapon is that they're just not very good at war. And I think the president really hit the reset button and said, look, let's actually produce long-term peace for the region” (01:44).
Markets and Oil Prices Respond to Geopolitical Shifts
Following the announcement of the ceasefire, financial markets exhibited unexpected behavior. In a Fox News interview, Giles Snyder notes that stocks gained and oil prices fell, despite Iran’s missile launch against a U.S. air base in Qatar, which resulted in no casualties (01:59).
Rafael Nam provides a detailed analysis: “It was not the reaction most investors had expected. Stocks gained instead of slumping even after the US attacked nuclear facilities in Iran over the weekend. That's because investors are still hoping tensions will ease” (02:15). He adds that oil prices declined as traders perceived that oil had already appreciated sufficiently earlier in the month due to Israel’s actions against Iran. Nonetheless, Nam cautions that market volatility remains a concern, and investors are staying vigilant amid the evolving situation (02:15).
Further corroborating this sentiment, Giles Snyder reports that Asian markets are rallying, with Japan's Nikkei index advancing, while oil prices continue to drop. The easing fears of Iran potentially disrupting the Strait of Hormuz contribute to the positive market movements (03:00).
Eli Lilly's Orphaglipron Shows Promise in Combating Obesity
Shifting focus to healthcare, Giles Snyder introduces a breakthrough in obesity treatment. Sidney Lupkin reports on Eli Lilly’s development of a new pill, Orphaglipron, which has demonstrated promising results akin to the successful drugs Ozempic and Wegovy (03:33).
The study, published in the New England Journal of Medicine, involved over 550 patients with type 2 diabetes. Participants on the highest dose of Orphaglipron experienced an average weight loss of 16 pounds. Additionally, the medication effectively lowered blood sugar levels without causing hypoglycemia, although some patients reported gastrointestinal issues at higher doses (03:33). While not a direct comparison to existing injectable drugs, the safety and efficacy profiles of Orphaglipron are encouraging. Eli Lilly plans to submit Orphaglipron for regulatory approval for obesity treatment by the end of the year (03:33).
Extreme Heat Persists with Record-Breaking Temperatures Expected
Giles Snyder highlights the severe and persistent heat wave affecting large parts of the United States. According to the government's heat health website, dangerously high temperatures will continue into the week, spanning from the Midwest to the East Coast. Forecasts predict daytime highs reaching the upper 90s to triple digits along the East Coast, with daily temperature records anticipated to be broken (04:23).
Thunder Celebrate Championship Victory with Downtown Parade
In sports, the Oklahoma City Thunder are set to celebrate their NBA Championship win. Following a thrilling victory over the Indiana Pacers in a decisive seven-game series, the team will hold a parade through downtown Oklahoma City on Tuesday morning. This marks a significant achievement for the franchise and its supporters (04:23).
