Live from NPR News in Washington, I'm Kristen Wright. From the NATO summit at the Hague, President Trump further dismissed a preliminary US Intelligence damage assessment of American strikes on three Iranian nuclear sites. The president is still describing the impact as obliteration. As NPR's Tamara Keith reports, Trump is downplaying the risk of Iran restarting its nuclear program.
Tamara Keith
President Trump said the US Would meet with Iranian officials next week, but he no longer sees urgency in pursuing an agreement with Iran to halt its nuclear ambitions.
Donald Trump
We may sign an agreement. I don't know. To me, I don't think it's that necessary. I mean, they had a war, they fought. Now they're going back to their world. I don't care if I have an agreement or not. We the only thing we'd be asking for is what we were asking for before about we want no nuclear, but we we destroyed the nuclear.
Tamara Keith
A preliminary US Intelligence assessment found damage from the strikes may be less severe than Trump has described, but the president said it's too soon to have the full picture. Tamara Keith, NPR News.

NATO leaders agreed to a new defense spending target of 5% of gross domestic product. The alliance says the increase is needed due to the threat posed by Russia. Zoran Mandani is on the cusp of winning New York City's Democratic mayoral primary. As David Brand with member station WNYC reports, the Democratic socialist is claiming victory.
David Brand
New York City's ranked choice voting system means the winner has to get a majority, but it's looking good for Mamdani. His main rival, former Governor Andrew Cuomo, already conceded defeat. The city's Board of Elections will begin ranked choice tabulations on July 1. Mamdani is a democratic socialist and could become the first Muslim mayor of New York, but victory isn't guaranteed. Current Mayor Eric Adams is running as an independent, and Cuomo says he may run on a third party line, too. For NPR News, I'm David Brand in New York.

It's another hot day in much of the central and eastern U.S. the National Weather Service has issued heat advisories and extreme heat warnings in about two dozen states from Louisiana to New Hampshire. NPR's Rebecca Hersher says the heat dome means dangerous conditions for those who work outside.
Ryan Poparello
Outdoor jobs can be dangerous in hot weather, for example, picking food, doing construction or delivering mail. Ryan Poparello works for the Laborers Health and Safety Fund of North America, a union affiliated group that represents about 3 million construction workers each year.
Tamara Keith
Construction consistently ranks among the top industries.

Paparillo spoke at a recent hearing about proposed federal heat protections that would require employers to offer water, shade and breaks during hot weather. Right now, only a few states have such rules in place. Rebecca Hersher, NPR News.

This is NPR News. Kilmar Abrego Garcia is expected to be taken into custody by federal immigration authorities today if he's released from a Tennessee jail. The government wrongly deported Abrego Garcia from Maryland to El Salvador in March. He was returned to the US earlier this month and has been jailed on human smuggling charges ever since. A judge ordered his release, and so a hearing is scheduled for this afternoon to set the conditions of his release. Abrego Garcia has been a flashpoint in the Trump administration's immigration policies. A SpaceX capsule is on its way to the International Space Station. It launched before dawn today from the Kennedy Space center in Florida. Brendan Byrne with Central Florida Public Media says astronauts from the US India and Poland and Hungary are on board.

It's the fourth mission brokered by the Houston, Texas based company Axiom Space. The company works with SpaceX for rides to the station and coordinates with NASA for the usage of the International Space Station for its astronauts. The mission comes after multiple delays, most recently after NASA investigated repairs to a leak on the space station now launched. It will take a little more than a day to catch up with and dock to the station. The crew will spend about 14 days living and working aboard the space station, conducting dozens of science experiments. After the time on orbit, they'll return to Earth and their capsule splashing down in the Pacific Ocean. For NPR News, I'm Brendan Byrne in Orlando.

A researcher in Switzerland says his team is finding a new occurrence in the country's glaciers, holes emerging from inside of them, sort of like Swiss cheese. The scientist believes the holes are caused by turbulence from water passing through the bottom of the glaciers. I'm Kristen Wright and this is NPR News from Washington. Support for npr.

A Swiss researcher has uncovered a new phenomenon within the country's glaciers: the formation of holes resembling Swiss cheese. The emerging cavities are hypothesized to result from turbulent water flows beneath the glaciers.
Kristen Wright reports on this intriguing development, highlighting its potential implications for climate science and glacier behavior.
