Live from NPR News in Washington, I'm Shea Stevens. Democratic Socialist Zoran Mamdami has won the first round of voting in the New York City Democratic primary for May. He addressed supporters late Tuesday.
Zoran Mamdami
Together we have shown the power of the politics of the future, one one of partnership and of sincerity.
Shea Stevens
Mamdami bested 10 other candidates, including former governor Andrew Cuomo, who's conceded the race.
Andrew Cuomo
Tonight was not our night. Tonight was Assemblyman Madame's night and he put together a great campaign.

Mamdani another round of voting because New York's ranked choice system requires at least 50% of the votes in order to win. Embattled incumbent Mayor Eric Adams plans to run as an independent in November. President Trump insists that the U.S. airstrikes on Iranian nuclear sites have destroyed those sites. That contradicts a leaked early intelligence assessment that the bombings damaged but did not destroy the sites. Meanwhile, a fragile ceasefire between Israel and Iran appears to be holding after initially faltering. The State Department is offering a $5 million reward for information about an Afghan American abducted by the Taliban three years ago. NPR's Michelle Kellerman has more.

Afghan American businessman Mahmoud Shah Habibi was working with the telecommunications company when he was arrested by the Taliban's intelligence service in August of 2022 along with more than two dozen colleagues. Others were released, but Habibi disappeared, according to State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce.

He has not been heard from since that time, and the so called Taliban government has not yet provided any information about Mr. Habibi's whereabouts or condition.

Powell says President Trump's economic policies are among the reasons why the central bank is being cautious on interest rates. NPR's Elena Selyuk reports on Powell's semiannual report to Congress.
Elena Selyuk
Powell says President Trump's tariffs pave a, quote, highly uncertain path for the US Economy, and that's a big reason why the central bank is taking a wait and see approach to cutting interest rates. The Fed chair says forecasts suggest a meaningful increase in inflation over the course of the year, but the Fed is open to the possibility that price increases could be brief or minor, which would inform its policy. Last week, the Fed held interest rates steady, as it's done since December. That's drawn increased attacks from Trump on the independent Fed and on Powell himself. Trump had originally appointed him, but in a new online post, calls him dumb and hard headed. Alina Selu, NPR News, Washington.

U.S. futures are higher in after hours trading. This is NPR. A dangerous heat wave is grippling, gripping much of the eastern half of the United States and pushing daily highs into the triple digits. And New York City's temperature reached a high of 100 degrees by midday on Tuesday. Nearly 40 U.S. cities broke records for high temperatures on Monday. The National Weather Service says nearly half the nation has been impacted by the extreme heat. A man charged in connection with the fertility clinic bombing in Palm Springs, California, has died in federal custody. Daniel park was being held on charges of supplying large amounts of chemicals used in the attack. From member station KVCR in San Bernardino, Madison Allment has details.
Madison Ament
Park was charged earlier this month for allegedly mailing some 270 pounds of ammonium nitrate to the FBI's main suspect in the bombing, guy Edward Bartkiss. Bartkiss detonated a car bomb outside the clinic that was felt for blocks. He was the only person that died in what federal prosecutors called a suicidal terror attack. The FBI has not said how park and Bartkus knew each other, but have said they shared a fringe ideology called pro mortalism, the belief that people should not exist. The Federal Bureau of Prisons has not said how park died. Their statement said park was found unresponsive in his cell at the Metropolitan Detention center in Los Angeles and declared dead at a hospital. For NPR News, I'm Madison Ament.
