Live from NPR News in Washington, I'm Jeanine Herbst. For the second straight night, the US Military says it conducted airstrikes on multiple targets in Iran in a direct response to what it says was an Iranian attack earlier in the day on an oil tanker in the Strait of Hormuz. Central Command says the tanker, a Panama flagged ship, was attacked by a one way Iranian attack drone. The US's commercial vessels though, continue to transit through the strait. The death toll from the twin earthquakes in Venezuela has risen to more than 1400. IMPER Zeta Peralta reports. Now the race is on to try to find survivors.

It has now been nearly 72 hours since two earthquakes of 7.2 and 7.5 magnitude shook Venezuela. Acting President Delse Rodriguez has militarized the state of La Guayra, just north of the capital Caracas. She says the priority right now is to find survivors. The government, she said, is mobilizing heavy equipment. Residents of La Guayra, however, say the help is insufficient. Many are digging using picks, shovels and bare hands. Experts say the greatest chance of fire finding Survivors comes within 72 hours of a quake. The fear is that many are still left under the rubble. Trump says he's nominating a former Oklahoma State trooper to lead Immigration and Customs Enforcement. The agency has been without a Senate confirmed director since 2017. NPR's Chandelyse Duster has more.

President Trump said in a social media post that he has chosen Lance Scheuer to be the next Immigration and Customs Enforcement director. Scheuer is senior advisor to Homeland Security Secretary Mark Wayne Mullen and has been overseeing coordination of immigration enforcement, according to the agency. He previously worked at the Oklahoma Department of Public Safety, was an Oklahoma state trooper and served as a U.S. marine. Scheuer's nomination must be approved by the Senate. If confirmed, he would replace acting ICE Director David Venturella. ICE has not had a Senate confir firm director since President Obama's administration. Chandelyse Duster, NPR News.

Kentucky Governor Andy Bashar has declared a state of emergency after flash floods that left at least one person dead, inundated multiple counties. Curtis Tate from member station WEKU has more.

Beshear said parts of Kentucky had already received 6 to 7 inches of rain Saturday, and he warned people to stay off the roads. He also said search and rescue teams were on the ground.

For more than a century, federal Indian boarding schools worked to break tribal bonds by isolating children from their families and forcing them to abandon their culture. history, being first established in 1890 as a native American boarding school, which we still are a boarding school, just not in the way that people would think a boarding school is.

That's Kyle Shativa, a junior at the school located in the middle of Santa Fe. It wasn't quite as isolated as other Native boarding schools, and where most of these schools forced assimilation. Santa Fe's became known for training many Native artists. As early as the 1930s, after New Deal era, public works money flowed into the surrounding area. Now the school safeguards Native culture and teaches 11 languages on campus. Generations of families work at and attend the school. Sequoia Carrillo, NPR News.
