Live from NPR News, I'm Dale Willman. Frustration is growing in Venezuela following last week's earthquake that killed more than 1400 people. As John Otis reports, survivors claim the government's response has been slow and inepts.

That's a backhoe digging through the ruins of a 12 story building that collapsed here in the coastal town of Los Corrales. But local residents say the government backhoe operator never showed up, so they had to pay for one. Many are incensed by government paralysis and bureaucracy. The security forces have been accused of looting. Doctors and rescue workers have faced delays getting to the disaster zone because they lacked government permits. And all this is costing lives, says Rosalia Bustamante, who lost several friends when the building collapsed. There were people in the ruins responding when we called out to them, she says, but now they are dead. For NPR News, I'm John Otis.

In Los Corrales, Venezuela, tens of thousands of people are still missing following the quakes. House Speaker Mike Johnson said Sunday he's sending a bipartisan housing affordability bill to President Trump on Monday. Trump had cancelled a signing ceremony for the measure last week in an effort to pressure Republicans to pass a controversial voter ID bill. Johnson met with Trump on Thursday to reschedule the signing for that bill.

The housing bill really is a Republican priority because it will lower housing costs. We made a lot of promises to the voters and we're fulfilling those every single day of this Congress. And this is a big part of that because it will increase the availability, the access to more housing, bring down costs, cut regulations, do the things that we know are very important for that market. The president, I talked about that at length. Of course he wants to do all those things.

Johnson was speaking on Fox News. The measure had overwhelming support from both Republicans and Democrats. It passed the house on the 35832 vote. Colorado's governor is mourning the loss of three wildland firefighters who died in a blaze near the Utah border. And as Colorado Public Radio Steena Sieg tells us, two firefighters were also seriously injured in the Snyder Mesa fire, which is is now covering almost 30,000 acres and is still 0% contained.

In a statement, Governor Jared Polis said he's, quote, devastated by the loss of three heroic firefighters who died in the line of duty. He expressed his solidarity with their families and crew members, five firefighters and A federal crew deployed their fire shelters Saturday as they battled a blaze near the Utah border. Only two survived, both with serious injuries. The governor is declared a state of emergency for the Snyder Mesa fire, one of many large wildfires burning across the West. And this is NPR News. Pakistani officials say security forces have launched a major operation along that country's border with Afghanistan. The operation follows a number of attacks by militants across Pakistan. Officials say the effort is targeting militant hideouts. So far, they say they've killed 29 militants. The knockout stage of the World cup started Sunday with Canada beating South Africa 2 1. The knockout means that starting now, any team that loses is out of the competition. NPR's Jasmine Garsd reports.

From here on out, there is no such thing as a game ending in a draw. If after a 90 minute game, the teams are even, they play an extra 30 minutes. If they're still tied after that, the game goes to penalties. And if after all that, they are still drawn, it becomes sudden death.
