Live from NPR News in Washington, I'm Dave Mattingley. Authorities in Idaho say they believe a gunman started a fire on Canfield Mountain yesterday and then opened fire on responding firefighters. Two firefighters were killed. A third was wounded. A motive is still under investigation. Jackson Holmes with Boise State Public Radio says the shootings occurred about 30 miles from Spokane, Washington.

At a press conference, Kootenay County Sheriff Bob Norris said about half an hour into fighting the fire, a gunman attacked fire personnel.

We had about 300 law enforcement officers that were on scene that were trying to make heads and tails out of what was occurring. And during this time we exchanged gunfire with the suspect.

Two firefighters were killed and one was taken to the hospital with serious injuries. The suspect was found dead with a firearm nearby. Officers believe the shooter started the fire and acted alone. With NPR News, I'm Jackson Holmes.

Republican Senator Tom Tillis of North Carolina says he's decided not to run for reelection next year. As Steve Harrison with member station WFAE reports, Tillis has clashed with President Trump over the GOP's massive tax and spending cut bill that's now before the Senate.

Tillis was one of two Republicans who voted against moving forward with the president's signature tax and spending bill. He said it would hurt rural North Carolina. Trump wrote on Truth Social that Tillis was making a big mistake and that he would be meeting with candidates who want to challenge the two term senator. In announcing he won't run for re election, Tillis said he didn't want to spend, quote, another six years navigating the political theater and partisan gridlock in Washington. North Carolina is considered one of the Democrats best chances to flip a Senate seat next year. For NPR News, I'm Steve Harrison in Charlotte.

President Trump has said he wants Congress to pass the budget bill by July 4, which is Friday. Over the weekend, GOP senators voted to bring the package to the floor for debate. The along with a series of amendments. That vote was 51 to 49. President Trump says he's not going to extend his current 90 day pause on tariffs for most countries beyond July 9th. The President told the FOX News program Sunday morning futures countries that have not agreed to a trade deal by then will be notified by the administration about what trade penalties will go into effectively Jury deliberations are scheduled to begin today in New York in the trial of hip hop mogul Sean Diddy Combs. He's charged with sex trafficking and racketeering conspiracy. Holmes has pleaded not guilty to the charges. The trial's been going on since early May. This is NPR News. Billionaire investor Warren Buffet says he plans to donate $6 billion worth of Berkshire Hathaway stock to five foundations. He says the transactions will be handled today. The largest donation is going to the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation Trust. That foundation is a financial supporter of npr. Buffett has donated tens of billions of dollars worth of company stock since 2006. The Brad Pitt Racing movie F1 was number one at the North American box office over the weekend. NPR's Bob Mondello has more.
