In Washington, I'm Korva Coleman. Authorities in Idaho say a gunman set a brush fire yesterday. He waited for firefighters to respond and then started to shoot at them. Two firefighters were killed. A third was badly wounded. Kootenai County Sheriff Bob Norris says Idaho officials believe the suspect acted alone.
Bob Norris
We do believe that the suspect started the fire and we do believe that it was an ambush and it was intentional.

The suspect was found dead near the scene with a gun nearby. The Senate is still debating the multi trillion dollar tax cut and spending bill backed by President Trump. Later this morning, the Senate is expected to begin a process called Vote O Rama. Senators can use this time to propose an open ended series of amendments. It's not clear how many could be offered. Meanwhile, the non partisan Congressional Budget Office has released a fresh estimate of the Senate's version of this bill. The CBO estimates the Senate version would add $3.3 trillion to the deficit in the next decade. NPR's Luke Garrett reports. That's compared to the earlier House version of the bill passed this year.
Luke Garrett
In May, the House passed the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, a package of tax cuts, Medicaid cuts and immigration and defense spending. This version of Trump's legislative agenda added 2.8 trillion to the nation's ballooning debt over 10 years, according to the Congressional Budget Office, now in the hands of the Senate. The CBO says the mega bill will add $3.3 trillion to the national debt. Driving the increase is an expansion of tax cuts within the Senate version of the bill. The higher cost is a major concern for GOP spending hawks like Senators Ron Johnson of Wisconsin, Cynthia Lummis of Wyoming, Rand Paul of Kentucky, Rick Scott of Florida, and Mike Lee of Utah. With a slim majority in the Senate, Republicans can only afford three defectors. Luke Garrett, NPR News, Washington.

The Trump administration is moving ahead with its multi billion dollar plan to upgrade the U.S. air traffic control system. NPR's Joe Hernandez reports. President Trump had a different idea for air traffic control in 2017.
Joe Hernandez
In his first term, President Trump called US air traffic control a, quote, ancient, broken, antiquated, horrible system and suggested turning it over to a private nonprofit. But that plan never got off the ground after critics said other countries struggled with their privatized systems and suggested the idea could hurt smaller airports. Jim Kuhn with the aircraft owners and pilots association says groups that were on opposite sides of the privatization debate are now uniting behind Trump's current plan to overhaul air traffic control.
Jim Kuhn
It's been discussed for decades. There's not consensus there, but there is consensus now to modernize our system, and that's what we want to do.
Joe Hernandez
Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy says modernizing air traffic control equipment nationwide could take just four years. Joe Heard Hernandez, NPR News.

On Wall street, in premarket trading, Dow futures are higher. This is NPR. The head of the UN's Nuclear Watchdog Agency says it's possible Iran could start enriching uranium again within months. The UN's Rafael Grossi told CBS Iran still has an ambitious nuclear program. President Trump insists recent U.S. bombing wiped out three Iranian nuclear sites. Canada has dropped a new tax on big American tech companies that was supposed to go into effect today. Last week, President Trump said he was immediately suspending trade talks with Canada over the issue. The tax was aimed at companies that engage with online users in Canada, but the tax was also retroactive. It would have imposed about $2 billion in levies due almost immediately. The main draw at the Wimbledon tennis tournament begins this hour. The 21 year old American player Coco Gauff is fresh off her win at the French Open. It was the second Grand Slam of her career. NPR's Becky Sullivan has this preview.
Becky Sullivan
The ladies draw at Wimbledon has been wide open for a few years now and there are four American women in the top 10 with Goff the highest at number two. But Wimbledon has consistently been Goff's weakest Grand Slam event. She's never been able to advance past the fourth round to reach the quarterfinals. So that's her goal.
Coco Gauff
She says, I would love to win this, but I'm like, I'm a big believer in just conquering one step at a time.
Becky Sullivan
On the men's side, the 22 year old Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz, the easy favorite. He's won Wimbledon the past two years running and a few weeks ago he won an instant classic French Open final over his Italian rival, Jannik Senner. It's a big gap between those two and the rest of the men in tennis. Becky Sullivan, NPR News.

Senate Debates Trump-Backed Tax and Spending Bill
Timestamp: [00:41]
The U.S. Senate is actively debating a multi-trillion dollar tax cut and spending bill endorsed by President Trump. This morning, the Senate is expected to initiate a process known as Vote O Rama, which allows senators to propose an open-ended series of amendments to the bill. NPR's Luke Garrett explains that the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) has released a fresh estimate indicating that the Senate version of the bill would increase the national deficit by $3.3 trillion over the next decade, surpassing the House's earlier estimate of $2.8 trillion passed in May. The primary driver of this increase is the expansion of tax cuts within the Senate bill. This higher cost is a significant concern for GOP spending hawks such as Senators Ron Johnson, Cynthia Lummis, Rand Paul, Rick Scott, and Mike Lee. With Republicans holding a slim majority in the Senate, they can only afford to have three defectors from their side, adding pressure to the negotiation process. [00:32 - 01:22]
Trump Administration Advances Air Traffic Control Overhaul
Timestamp: [02:04]
The Trump administration is pressing forward with a multi-billion dollar initiative to modernize the U.S. air traffic control (ATC) system. NPR's Joe Hernandez details that although President Trump initially proposed privatizing ATC in 2017—describing it as an "ancient, broken, antiquated, horrible system"—the idea faced significant opposition and did not advance. However, the current plan has gained bipartisan support. "It's been discussed for decades. There's not consensus there, but there is consensus now to modernize our system, and that's what we want to do," commented Jim Kuhn from the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association at [02:49]. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy added that the modernization effort could be completed nationwide within four years, marking a significant shift from previous stalled attempts. [02:04 - 02:57]
International News: UN on Iran's Nuclear Program & US-Canada Tax Dispute
Timestamp: [03:07 - 04:10]
On the international front, Rafael Grossi, head of the UN's Nuclear Watchdog Agency, warned that Iran might resume uranium enrichment within months, highlighting the ongoing challenges in containing the country's ambitious nuclear program. This assertion counters President Trump's claims that recent U.S. bombings have destroyed three Iranian nuclear sites. Additionally, Canada has reversed its new tax on major American tech companies—a move originally set to impose approximately $2 billion in levies immediately and intended to affect companies interacting with Canadian online users. This tax, which was retroactive, prompted President Trump to suspend trade talks with Canada, escalating tensions between the two nations. [03:07 - 04:10]

The Wimbledon tennis tournament is set to kick off, featuring standout performances from American and international players. Coco Gauff, a 21-year-old American, enters the ladies' draw following her recent victory at the French Open, marking her second Grand Slam title. NPR's Becky Sullivan notes, "Wimbledon has consistently been Gauff's weakest Grand Slam event. She's never been able to advance past the fourth round to reach the quarterfinals. So that's her goal," highlighting her determination to overcome past challenges. On the men's side, Carlos Alcaraz, a 22-year-old Spaniard, is the favored contender after winning Wimbledon the past two years and securing the French Open title by defeating Italy's Jannik Sinner. Sullivan emphasizes the significant gap Alcaraz has established over his competitors, positioning him as the standout player in this year's tournament. [04:10 - 04:47]
