In Washington, I'm Korva Coleman. This morning, the Senate will open the process to add amendments to the multi trillion dollar tax cut and spending bill. It's backed by President Trump. Senate support for the bill is seen as very narrow. Republic Republicans can only afford to lose three Senate votes for the measure to pass. One of those no votes is North Carolina Republican Thom Tillis. He says supporting the Senate version of the tax cut and spending bill will drastically harm Americans for years to come.
Thom Tillis
I'm telling the president that you have been misinformed. You supporting the Senate mark will hurt people who are eligible and qualified for Medicaid.

Trump lambasted Tillis online, saying he would find someone to run against the North Carolina Republican. But Tillis also announced yesterday he is going to retire at the end of his term. Canada has dropped a new tax on big US Tech firms that was supposed to take effect today. Last week, President Trump warned he would end trade talks with Canada if that country imposed the tax. Authorities in northern Idaho say they believe a gunman started a brush fire yesterday and then opened fire on respondents firefighters. Two firefighters were killed. A third was wounded. A motive is still under investigation. From Boise State Public Radio, Jackson Holmes reports.
Bob Norris
At a press conference, Kootenai County Sheriff Bob Norris said about half an hour into fighting the fire, a gunman attacked fire personnel.
Thom Tillis
We had a about 300 law enforcement officers that were on scene that were trying to make heads and tails out of what was occurring. And during this time we exchanged gunfire with the suspect.
Bob Norris
Two firefighters were killed and one was taken to the hospital with serious injuries. The suspect was found dead with a firearm nearby. Officers believe the shooter started the fire and acted alone. For NPR News, I'm Jackson Holmes.

Jurors in New York City are expected to begin deliberating in the federal trial of Sean diddy combs today. NPR's Isabella Gomez Sarmiento reports. The hip hop mogul faces charges that include sex trafficking and racketeering.
Isabella Gomez Sarmiento
For nearly seven weeks, federal prosecutors laid out testimony and evidence to try to prove Combs is guilty of the crimes he's charged with. They accuse him of running a criminal enterprise that facilitated and concealed sex crimes for over a decade. Combs defense lawyers deny these accusations. They say Combs was involved in consensual relationships that were totally separate from his many companies. Today, Judge Arun Subramanian will give the jury instructions on what to consider as they begin deliberating. If convicted on all counts, Combs could spend the remainder of his life in prison. And you're listening to NPR News from Washington. New York City police are investigating a shooting last night that wounded two people. They were nearby the historic Stonewall Inn, a landmark site of LGBTQ rights. New York City's mayor says that she happened just as pride celebrations were finishing for the weekend. One person is in critical condition, another is in stable condition. No one has been identified as a suspect. France has enacted an outdoor smoking ban that prohibits lighting up in public places where children could be present. As NPR's Eleanor Beardsley reports, that includes public parks, swimming pools, beaches and bus stops.
Catherine Vautrin
French Health and Family Minister Catherine Vautrin said tobacco must disappear from places where there are children. A recent poll shows 62% of the French agree, including 29 year old Maya Martin, who was enjoying a cigarette in a Paris park a day ahead of the ban.
Isabella Gomez Sarmiento
I think it's a good thing because there's a lot of children around us and it's not good for them to smoke around them.
Catherine Vautrin
Violators risk fines upwards of $150. Smokers will still be able to partake at outdoor cafes and restaurants. E cigarettes are not included. Eleanor Beardsley, NPR News, Paris.
