House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries has entered his eighth hour fiercely debating against President Trump's bill that extends trillions in tax cuts, partially paid for by big cuts to Medicaid and food assistance. But the House's Republican majority is poised to approve the package. Republican strategist Brendan buck spoke to NPR's Morning Edition about what likely prompted several Republicans to switch their votes from no to yes during a procedural vote overnight.

They understood this bill is not going to change, and they were really only prolonging the inevitable here. Of course, Donald Trump, Donald Trump also weighing in and his staff putting pressure on them, I'm sure helped a little bit, but there was really nowhere else to go for some of these members. The Senate bill was not going to change. They have this deadline and they were a really small number of these folks who were wanting to vote no. And I think eventually the walls just sort of closed in on them.

Meanwhile, some fiscal hardliners raise concerns that the bill significantly adds to the deficit. Employers in the US added 147,000 jobs in the month of June, more than economists were expecting. We have more from NPR's Scott Horsley.

Job gains were concentrated last month in health care and state and local government. The federal government continued to shed jobs, cutting 7,000 positions last month. Factories also cut about 7,000 jobs in June. The manufacturing sector has been hard hit by President Trump's tariffs. Otherwise, hiring held steady last month, roughly matching the pace of the last year. Job gains for April and May were also revised up. Average wages last month were up 3.7% from a year ago, which is likely more than enough to outpace inflation. The solid job market likely means the Federal Reserve will not be in a hurry to cut interest rates, despite jawboning from Trump, who wants to see lower borrowing costs. Gaza hospital officials report more than 80 Palestinians were killed by Israeli fire overnight as Israel intensifies its military offensive in Gaza. That's as Hamas says it's studying a proposal for new ceasefire talks. NPR's Daniel Estrin reports. Israel says it wants high level talks soon.

Officials from both Hamas and Israel say there are positive signs that both sides are ready to negotiate. Negotiate a ceasefire in Gaza. Israel's foreign minister said Israel wants talks as soon as possible. A person briefed on the matter, not authorized to speak about it publicly, said Israel has agreed to a 60 day ceasefire with Hamas, releasing around half of the living and dead hostages it's holding and Israel releasing Palestinian prisoners. There would also be US Guarantees that during the ceasefire the sides would discuss a final end to the war. It could take weeks of talks before a ceasefire begins. Jota, who was 28, was traveling in a Lamborghini with his younger brother, Andres Silva, who was also killed. Spanish authorities said their investigation points to a road accident due to a tire blowout while overtaking. The car burst into flames as it crashed and firefighters were called to the scene to contain a fire that had spread into the surrounding area.
