In Washington, I'm Korva Coleman. The House of Representatives spent all night haggling over the multi trillion dollar tax cut and spending bill. It's backed by President Trump. The bill narrowly passed a procedural vote a few hours ago and now it's moving toward the final vote in the chamber that that's expected soon. NPR's Claudia Grisales says a handful of Republicans had blocked the bill's advancement toward a final vote, but GOP leaders got them to change their minds.

We're still learning the specifics of what Republican leaders agreed to in order to sway them to yes, but what we do know is that for hours, more than half a dozen of them withheld their votes and at least four at times it went to five were no's. Some of these holdouts wanted material changes to the bill, but Republican leaders said it's too late in the process. So it's possible promises on future bills were made. We'll have to wait and see. But they were also facing immense pressure from President Trump, who late into the night was posting on social media, pressuring them to get on board.

NPR's Claudia Grisales reporting. Again, a final vote is expected shortly. The Justice Department has announced charges against a California man who is accused of belonging to a transnational terrorist group. NPR's Ryan Lucas has details.

Court papers identify the defendant as Noah Lam. Prosecutors say Lam is a member of the Terrorgram Collective, which operates on the social media platform Telegram. The group promotes white supremacy, violence and the creation of a white ethnostate. According to the indictment, Lam conspired with two other Terragram members to create a hit list of high value targets, including a US Senator and a federal judge, and then try to get others to assassinate the individuals on the list. Lamb's alleged associates were charged last year. Lamb himself now faces eight counts, including conspiracy and soliciting the murder of a federal official. Ryan Lucas, NPR News, Washington.

At a hearing hours after the verdict was read in Manhattan, Judge Arun Subramanian denied Sean Combs request to await his sentencing from the comforts of his home. Per ap, the judge said Combs had not demonstrated a, quote, lack of danger to any person or the community. Combs was convicted on two prostitution related federal charges, but the jury found him not guilty of more serious charges of racketeering and sex trafficking. Combs faces a maximum of 10 years in prison for each of the two prostitution related counts. Anastasia Tsiolkas, NPR News, New York.

John Combs, sentencing date in federal court is now tentatively set for October 3rd. You're listening to NPR News. A federal judge has blocked President Trump's effort to deny migrants entry into the US in order to apply for asylum. Trump had issued a proclamation on his first day in office, but the judge said the president does not have the power to create an alternative immigration system. This July 4th holiday weekend will be a test for the nation's air travel system and especially for Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey. As NPR's Joel Rose reports, the airport is recovering after major disruptions.
Flight Tech Announcement
And folks from Flight Tech welcome aboard Flight 4408, service to Newark. Things are going pretty smooth in Newark today.
Joel Rose
Even the captain sounds a bit surprised when our flight takes off for Newark on time. In April and May, hundreds of flights were delayed, canceled or diverted, drawing national attention to Newark. And travelers like TJ Ceballos have not forgotten those problems.
TJ Ceballos
I have been delayed at least an hour, if not up to six hours based on what's happened. It's just insane. It's absolutely insane.
Joel Rose
But things did improve after a Runway that was under construction reopened. Since the beginning of June, Newark has been the most reliable airport in the New York City area. Joel Rose, NPR News, Newark, New Jersey.

Astronomers are watching a new object that's hurtling through space. They suspect it may have come from a different solar system. If that's proven true, it would only be the third interstellar object known to pass through our solar system. The scientists say it is too soon to tell whether the object is a comet or even a rocky asteroid, but they don't think it will get any closer to us than the orbit of Mars. I'm Korva Coleman, NPR News, in Washington.
