Live from NPR News in Washington, I'm Dan Ronan. Funeral ceremonies and processions for the late Iranian supreme Leader are underway in Tehran. He was killed in the US's ready airstrikes in February during a fragile ceasefire between the US, Israel and Iran. NPR's Hadil Alshashi reports from Istanbul.

A huge crowd of people chanted Death to America as they gathered at a prayer complex in Tehran where they visited the caskets of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and four of those killed from his family. People held up signs that read KillTrump. Others waved flags, red ones that symbolize revenge and many yellow ones that represented the Iranian backed Lebanese militia Hezboll. The group has been fighting with Israel since the beginning of the war. While there was no sign of the current Iranian leader, Khamenei's son, Mushtaba Khamenei, the Iranian president and the Iranian speaker of Parliament were seen praying near the coffins. Washington's national Independence Day parade was cancelled, according to an announcement from organisers emailed late Friday night. The parade had been scheduled to mark the nation's 250th birthday and to begin mid morning Saturday. Todd Marcochi, president of under the Sun Productions, which was overseeing the parade, said the move followed consultation with the National park service, the D.C. city government and Freedom250, the non profit overseeing the anniversary celebrations. The National Weather Service has issued an extreme heat warning for the D.C. area in effect until 9pm local time on Saturday, warning that, quote, heat related illnesses increased significantly during extreme heat and high humidity events. Members of a white nationalist group called the Patriot Front held a March in Washington, D.C. today near Union Station. The march was peaceful. The World Health Organization is declaring the hantavirus outbreak is officially over. NPR's Jonathan Lambert reports.

The outbreak was first reported in early May when passengers aboard the MV Hondias cruise ship tested positive for hantavirus. The disease can be deadly. Typically, humans get the virus through exposure to rodent urine, feces or saliva. But the outbreak on the cruise ship sparked concern that it might be spreading more readily through the air from person to person. Ultimately, only 13 cases were confirmed, three of whom died. But the WHO said over 30 countries and territories responded to the outbreak, tracing more than 650 possible contacts who might have been exposed to the virus. The now the last of those contacts has tested negative after quarantine, leading the WHO to close the book on the outbreak. Jonathan Lambert, NPR News.

Less than one week before her 180 day mandate as the acting president of Venezuela expires, Delsey Rodriguez is facing criticism how her government has handled the twin earthquakes that have killed more than 2,500 people. Friday, Rodriguez met with reporters for the first time since the June 24 disaster. She defended her handling of the crisis even as numerous organizations and individuals have said the government was slow to act and lives were lost as a result. Serena Williams has withdrawn from Wimbledon in the doubles match with her sister Venus due to a knee injury. NPR's Chloe Veltman reports. The 22 time doubles champ had planned to team up for a Grand Slam match for the first time since 2022 today.

The 44 year old tennis star's injury occurred during a singles Australia's Myer joint earlier this week, which Williams lost. Doctors had to drain fluid from her swollen knee. In a video on her Instagram, Williams can be seen limping down a narrow corridor in shorts and T shirts with a huge white bandage covering most of her right leg.
