Live from NPR News, I'm Giles Snyder. Search and rescue efforts are ongoing after severe Independence Day flooding in the Texas Hill Country. The focus is on the search for some two dozen girls at a summer camp along the flooded Guadalupe River. Texas Public Radio's Jack Morgan officials there.
Jack Morgan
Tell us there's about 500 booths on the ground and 14 helicopters searching the skies. I saw a couple of those pontoon style boats going at full speed up the Guadalupe looking for people stranded in trees. First responders set up three separate points where people who had lost or damaged homes to come for meals and for help.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott says the search will continue through the night while parents post photos of their daughters on social media asking for any information. Authorities say the number of those confirmed dead in the flooding has increased to at least 24. President Trump has signed into law that massive tax cut and spending plan that Congress sent to his desk. He staged an outdoor ceremony as fighter jets and two Stealth bombers flew overhead during a White House Fourth of July picnic. The bill's passage amounts to a big win for Trump, who argues it will bo economic growth. Millions of women will likely lose access to reproductive health care, including birth control, under that new spending bill. NPR's Katie Ariddle reports that hundreds of clinics are in danger of closing.

In addition to Medicaid cuts, one part of the bill specifically targets funding for Planned Parenthood. That organization provides services like cancer screening and contraceptives. Michelle Velasquez is an attorney at Planned Parenthood of Wisconsin.
Michelle Velasquez
Our goal is to be be able to continue to provide as much health care as we can to as many people. We may not be able to do that because about 60% of our patient population has some form of Medicaid as their as their primary insurance coverage.

There were fireworks on Wall street this week as two of the major stock indexes repeatedly notched record highs. NPR Scott Horsley reports. A solid jobs report contributed to the market's weekly gain.
Scott Horsley
Both the S&P 500 index and the Nasdaq closed out the holiday shortened week in record territory after a report Thursday showing U.S. employers added 147,000 jobs last month. The unemployment rate fell to a low 4.1%. The job market has been generally resilient. Although President Trump's trade war has taken a toll on manufacturing jobs, factories cut 7,000 jobs in June and a similar number the month before. The overall job gains were better than expected, meaning the Federal Reserve will likely wait until at least September to resume cutting interest rates. For the week, The Nasdaq rose 1.6%, the S&P climbed 1.7%, and the Dow jumped 2.3%. Scott Horsley, NPR News, Washington.

And you're listening to NPR News. The Palestinian militant group Hamas has responded to President Trump's proposal for a 60 day ceasefire in Gaza. In a statement, Hamas says it delivered a positive response to mediators and that the group is ready to resume talks to reach a deal. President Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu are expected to meet on Monday in Washington to discuss the proposal. South Korea will ban military and police from entering the parliament under martial law. NPR Seon Gong reports that new rules follow former President Yoon Song Yeol's brief imposition of military rule in December.

The revisions passed this week forbid martial law troops from entering the parliament without the speaker's consent. The the new law also bans anyone from blocking entry of lawmakers and parliamentary staff. When President Yoon declared martial law last year, he sent troops and police to the national assembly to block lawmakers entry. Some elected officials had to scale walls and push through troops to reach the assembly hall. The parliament eventually voted to lift martial law and later impeached the president. Former President Yoon is now standing trial over charges of insurrection. He is also facing a special counsel investigation into charges of treason and mutiny. Se Euon Gong, NPR News, Seoul.
