Live from NPR News in Washington, I'm Dan Ronan. The preliminary hearing begins Monday for the man accused of fatally shooting conservative activist Charlie Kirk. The five day proceeding in Utah is expected to provide the first detailed look at the case against the suspect. NPR's Windsor Johnston reports.

Prosecutors are expected to present their case as they seek to have 23 year old Tyler Robinson stand trial on aggravated murder charges. Kirk's widow and parents are expected to attend the proceedings, which will be live streamed from the courtroom. Investigators say Robinson turned himself in after the shooting. Court documents say he sent a text message confessing and left a note saying he had an opportunity to kill one of the nation's leading conservative voices. Robinson has not entered a plea before his death. Kirk and the organization he co founded, Turning Point usa, helped mobilize young conservative voters as President Trump won a second term in office. Fires raging in the Pyrenees Orientale region have forced thousands of evacuations. The blazes have also pushed organizers to divert the third stage of the Tour de France Monday. In Paris, temperatures are expected to reach the mid-90s this week, where the large majority of buildings and homes do not have air conditioning. France had its hottest June on record this year and recorded some 2,000 excess deaths caused by the extreme heat. That's an increase of 30%. Deaths rose by 62% in the Paris region. Scientists say Europe is heating faster than any other continent, partly due to melting glaciers and the changing atmospheric and ocean currents surrounding the continent. Investors are headed for their first full week of trading in July with the Dow Jones at a record high. But as NPR's Rafael Nam reports, there's uncertainty about inflation and interest rates.

Wall street is headed for a quieter week with no major economic data coming out. The primary event will likely be the release of minutes from the latest Federal Reserve meeting, the first to take place under new chair Kevin Warsh. Back in June, the Fed kept interest rates on hold, but left open the prospect of raising them should inflation remain elevated. Investors will now scrutinize the minutes to get more insight about what policymakers are thinking, especially with a new inflation report due out later this month. Rafael Nunn, NPR News.

The second day of funeral services in Iran were held for Iran's late supreme leader and four family members who died on February 28th at the start of the US Israeli war. Many in the crowd shouted death to America to avenge the death of the 86 year old leader. This is NPR. President Trump called FIFA's president, asking the soccer agency to review the red card that had been given to American soccer player father and Baligun. This according to an official with knowledge of the call who was granted anonymity to discuss a private conversation. FIFA has now lifted the automatic one game suspension. This will allow Baligan to play against Belgium tomorrow night after he was suspended for stepping on the foot of a player from Bosnia Herzegovina last week. Minions and monsters in Toy Story 5 each sold more than $30 million worth of tickets over the weekend. But as NPR's Bob Bundello reports, NPR is buzzing about the historical biopic that came in third.

Young Washington, which had ticket sales of just over $20 million, is from Angel Studios, the faith based media company that opened Sound of Freedom on the 4th of July three years ago. That one also had a three day total, around 20 million, then played so well in Rocky Mountain states, the Midwest and South that it ended up making over $250 million globally. The Angel Studio playbook hasn't changed. Young Washington also has its numbers in America's heartland. Its top theater is Utah's megaplex 18 Thanksgiving Point, midway between Salt Lake City and Provo. The studio has already announced a George Washington sequel called 1776. Bob Mondello, NPR News.
