In Washington, I'm Kristen Wright. The number of dead in Central Texas is still rising and at least 82 people were killed in catastrophic flash flooding on July 4th before dawn. Many victims are children who were at sleepaway camp in Kerr County. NPR's Greg Allen reports. Some girls and other people swept up by the Guadalupe river are still missing.
Greg Allen
People here are just in shock. Still, I spent some time in the town of Hunt, a small town right along, not too far from Camp mystic, the girls camp where, you know, so many of the deaths occurred and where the search is still centered. The hunt was just devastated, though. Many people who live in homes along the river and in RV parks just saw their homes destroyed. Trailers are washed away. Homes and businesses are all flooded in many of the areas.

Search and recovery efforts continue. More rain is in the forecast today and flood watches are in effect in Central Texas. Meanwhile, there are questions about whether officials communicated sufficient weather warnings to those in danger. Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is set to visit the White House today. This comes as President Trump is again trying to broker a ceasefire in Gaza, as NPR's Tamara Keith reports.
Tamara Keith
In a social media post, Trump said he is aiming for a 60 day Gaza ceasefire that would see the release of more Israeli hostages and could lead to an enduring into a war that has raged since the Hamas attack on Israel October 7, 2023. And then there's the matter of Iran and its nuclear program, which Trump says was out by US Airstrikes. Last month, Trump previewed the Netanyahu visit during a flight on Air Force One.
Donald Trump
Well, it's going to be a very quick celebration. We had a great hit. It was a obliteration, okay? Now it turns out it was an obliteration.

Trump says he is open to direct talks with Iran, something Israel has opposed in the past. Tamara Keith, NPR News.

The White House says this Wednesday's tariff deadline could be extended to August 1st for some countries. The president says letters informing trading partners partners of new tariff rates will start going out today. NPR's Don Gonyea reports.
Don Gonyea
Now tariffs have been Trump's trade weapon of choice. A few months ago, he famously imposed steep and wide ranging tariffs on imports from more than 100 nations, including close allies like Japan and the European Union. But since that day in April, the president has taken an on again, off again approach with some individual nations. That's made the policy difficult to track for for negotiators, but also for consumers in the US who will eventually bear the cost. Still, a deadline for countries to reach an agreement with the Trump White House looms. Don Gonyea, NPR News.

You're listening to NPR News from Washington. Leaders of some of the world's emerging economies are convening in Brazil for the annual BRICS conference. The bloc of 11 member countries condemned the war in Gaza and U.S. strikes on nuclear sites in Iran. NPR's Kerry Khan reports from Rio de Janeiro.
Kerry Khan
Brazil's President Luisa Nacio Lula da Silva, host of this year's BRICS summit, opened with criticism of NATO's move to hike military spending. It's always easier to invest in war than in peace, lula told a packed haul of leaders from emerging economies. The group, which has attempted to be a geopolitical counterweight to G7 economies, recently expanded to include many Middle Eastern nations as well as Indonesia and Ethiopia. Consensus among the differing countries has been tough, but it did release a declaration Sunday which not only took aim at the U.S. s ongoing tariff hikes, which it says threatens global trade, but also expressed, quote, grave concern for the humanitarian situation in Gaza. Carrie Kahn, NPR News, Rio de Janeiro.

Elon Musk says he's formed a new political party called the America Party. Musk posted this on X over the weekend. He says it's in response to President Trump's new sweeping tax cut and spending law, which Musk criticized as bankrupting the country. Tropical Depression Chantal is moving across southern and eastern Virginia. Heavy rain is expected there and in parts of Delaware and southern New Jersey and Pennsylvania. The National Weather Service says there is a threat of flash flooding. Several counties in North Carolina are now dealing with major flooding from Chantal and water rescues. I'm Kristen Wright, and this is NPR News from Washington.
