Live from NPR News in Washington, I'm Windsor Johnston. Texas Governor Greg Abbott is calling the state Legislature back to the Capitol for a special se. Texas Public Radio's David Martin Davies reports. Lawmakers are meeting nearly a week after catastrophic flooding left at least 118 people dead, including dozens of children.

The special session begins on Monday, July 21. In Abbott's announcement, he said in the aftermath of the devastating floods in the Texas Hill country that the state must ensure better preparation for such events in the future. The this includes legislation to improve early warning flood systems in flood prone areas throughout Texas, as well as relief funding for the impacted Hill Country. Abbott is also directing the lawmakers to redraw the state's congressional map, which would increase the number of Republican seats.
