NPR News in Washington, I'm Jeanine Hurst. The head of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, or irgc, is praising the late supreme Leader as a martyr and and called for revenge. The Iranian commander is rarely seen in public, but as NPR's Hadil Al Shalqi reports, he made an exception to attend the late Iranian leader's funeral.

Brigadier General Ahmad Vahedi said the death of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was the beginning of a, quote, new chapter of honor and perseverance in Iran. In a statement, he called Khamenei, who was killed at the start of the U S. Israeli war against Iran, a martyr and that the Islamic Revolutionary Guard will not rest until justice is served. While Vahidi occasionally issues public public statements, his attendance at Khamenei's funeral was the first public appearance since the start of the war. Widdicombe was a Brexit supporter and was known for her socially conservative views in politics, opposing abortion and LGBTQ rights.
