Live from NPR News, I'm Dale Willman. The federal government allowed Camp mystic in Texas to remove multiple buildings from government flood maps even though the camp faced a significant risk of flood. That's according to federal records seen by NPR's Laura Sullivan.
Laura Sullivan
FEMA documents examined by NPR show the camp requested FEMA remove more than a dozen structures from its floodplain maps, even though FEMA had previously found significant flood risk. The request came in 2013, 2019 and 2020. The last request coincided with a major expansion the camp undertook in which it built new structures, but it does not appear to have taken down any cabins from dangerous flood areas. Removing structures from FEMA's flood maps can eliminate federal requirements to build in ways that help property owners better withstand a flood, as well as requirements to carry flood insurance. NPR found new data by private companies Show at least 17 of the camp's buildings were in the path of floodwaters compared to what the government has reported. FEMA told NPR its maps differ from private maps because they must face public discussion and and review. Laura Sullivan, NPR News.

French President Emmanuel Macron called on European countries to remain firm and united as President Trump calls for 30% tariffs on EU products. The tariffs go into effect if no deal is reached by August 1st. NPR's Eleanor Beardsley reports that the tariff threat came as a surprise.
Eleanor Beardsley
Europeans were hoping to keep the tariffs at 10% in ongoing negotiations. Trump announced the increase in a letter to European Commission head Ursula von der Leyen thinking and published it on social media. Analysts say Trump is trying to increase pressure and divide the continent. Some countries want to make a quick deal as the uncertainty is hurting businesses and costing hundreds of millions. In a written response, the commission said it was committed to working towards an agreement, but also said it would take all necessary steps to safeguard EU interests, including the adoption of proportionate countermeasures if required. Palestinian health officials say Israeli settlers in the occupied west bank have killed a Palestinian U.S. citizen. NPR's Hadil Al Shalchi reports from Tel Aviv.

21 year old Sayfullah Mislet was born in Florida and visiting family in the occupied West Bank. Israeli settlers beat him to death in the village of Sinjil, according to a municipality official. A US Embassy spokesperson confirmed Maslit's death. The Israeli military said that a confrontation broke out between Palestinians Israelis there, and it was investigating reports of a Palestinian civilian killed. Israeli officials rarely prosecute offenders, and when they do, a very small percentage end in conviction. In April, a 14 year old Palestinian American was killed by Israeli forces in turmoil. Family members said there has been no action taken by the US Government. Hadil Al Shalchi, NPR News, Tel Aviv.

And you're listening to NPR News. The squirting cucumber is small and toxic. Once it becomes pressurized with fluid, the slightest disturbance causes it to burst and expel its seeds. Ari Daniel reports on what researchers are learning about its stunning feat of ballistics and just what it could mean for science.
Ari Daniel
A team at Kiel University in Germany examined the physics of the squirting cucumber by filming it at 10,000 frames a second. First, the stem lifts off and a jet of fluid spurts out, accompanied by one seed shooting out at a time, reaching velocities of nearly 30 miles an hour and distances of almost 40ft. The group, including Ph.D. student Helen Gorgas, also examined the seed's mucilaginous coat and the strength of its stickiness. She found a single seed adheres so tightly it could support a six pound baby.

The fruit really prepares for perfect dispersal.

Gorgas says the squirting cucumber may help inspire soft robotics to disperse seeds on farms and deliver drugs in the human body. For NPR News, I'm ari D. Daniel.

Iga Swiatek won her first Wimbledon championship today with a 6060 win over Amanda Anisimova at the All England Club. It took just 57 minutes for Swiatek to win her sixth Grand Slam title. The 24 year old from Poland has already won four trophies at the French Open. This match was the first Wimbledon women's final in 114 years in which one player failed to win a single game. Aaron Judge hit his 350th career home run today in a game between the Yankees and the Cubs. He's done that faster than any other player. Judge achieves the milestone in 192 fewer games than Mark McGwire. I'm Dale Willman, NPR News.

The federal government has permitted Camp Mystic in Texas to exclude multiple buildings from official floodplain maps, despite the camp being situated in an area with significant flood risks. According to FEMA documents analyzed by NPR, Camp Mystic submitted requests in 2013, 2019, and 2020 to exclude over a dozen structures from these maps. Notably, the 2020 request aligned with a major expansion of the camp, which included the construction of new buildings without removing any existing cabins from high-risk flood zones.
Removing structures from FEMA’s flood maps has critical implications. It not only relieves property owners from federal building standards designed to withstand floods but also exempts them from mandatory flood insurance requirements. Laura Sullivan highlights that private sector data reveals at least 17 Camp Mystic buildings lie directly in potential flood paths, surpassing government assessments. When questioned, FEMA attributed discrepancies to their maps undergoing public review processes, distinguishing them from private evaluations.

French President Emmanuel Macron has urged European nations to maintain solidarity in the face of escalating trade tensions with the United States. This call comes as President Donald Trump announced a drastic increase in tariffs on European Union (EU) products from an existing 10% to 30%, slated to take effect if a trade agreement isn’t finalized by August 1st. Eleanor Beardsley reports that this escalation took European negotiators by surprise, disrupting ongoing discussions aimed at mitigating uncertainty that has been detrimental to businesses and costing the EU hundreds of millions.
Analysts interpret Trump’s move as an attempt to intensify pressure and sow division within Europe. In response, the European Commission has reiterated its commitment to reaching a settlement while also preparing to implement “proportionate countermeasures” to protect EU interests if necessary.

A tragic incident has occurred in the occupied West Bank where Israeli settlers killed 21-year-old Sayfullah Mislet, an American citizen of Palestinian descent visiting family. The fatal assault took place in the village of Sinjil, as confirmed by both local municipality officials and a U.S. Embassy spokesperson. The Israeli military stated that a confrontation between Palestinian and Israeli individuals led to Mislet’s death and is currently investigating the circumstances.
This incident underscores a troubling pattern, as Israeli authorities seldom prosecute settlers involved in such violence. Previously, in April, a 14-year-old Palestinian American was killed by Israeli forces amid similar unrest. Family members of Mislet have expressed frustration over the lack of action from the U.S. government regarding these matters.

Researchers at Kiel University in Germany have delved into the remarkable mechanics of the squirting cucumber’s seed dispersal. Using high-speed cameras operating at 10,000 frames per second, the team observed that the cucumber’s stem detaches and propels a fluid jet, ejecting individual seeds at speeds approaching 30 miles per hour and covering distances up to nearly 40 feet. Ph.D. student Helen Gorgas examined the seeds’ mucilaginous coating, discovering that a single seed’s adhesion is so potent it can support a six-pound weight.

Gorgas suggests that understanding this natural ballistic system could inspire advancements in soft robotics, potentially enhancing seed dispersal in agricultural settings or enabling novel drug delivery mechanisms within the human body.
