Live from NPR News, I'm Dale Willman. President Trump was in flood ravaged Kerrville, Texas, Friday, where he met with first responders and local officials. Kerr county was the area hardest hit is flooding.
Christi
When the request was made for the emergency funds, Christi I think we we gave it within about two minutes, maybe less, and they had everything they needed, right? Right immediately. So We've deployed over 400 first responders and assisted or enabled more than 1500 rescues.

While praising the government response, Trump did not address his oft repeated plans to eliminate fema, the government agency charged with responding to disasters. Texas Governor Greg Abbott, meanwhile, says there will be a special legislative session in 10 days in part to discuss how to respond better to disasters moving forward. The White House is downplaying reports of friction between Attorney General Pam Bondi and Deputy FBI Director dan Bongino. As NPR's Tamara Keith reports, a White House spokesman is describing unity between the two.

NPR hasn't independently confirmed the reports, but multiple news outlets say Bongino and Bondi are at loggerheads over the Jeffrey Epstein files. Epstein was a sex offender who the Justice Department says died by suicide while in federal custody. Many in Trump's MAGA base, outraged that more evidence hasn't been released, are taking sides in the reported Bongino Bondi feud. In a statement, White House spokesman Harrison Fields says President Trump has assembled a highly qualified team whose work is being carried out seamlessly and with unity, adding that any attempt to sow division within this team is baseless. The president of Brazil continues to strike back against President Trump's threat to slap a 50% tariff on all goods coming into the U.S. nPR's Carrie Conn has more on our story.

Brazil's current president, Luisa Nacio Lula da Silva, is not backing down. Lula has been giving interviews, flooding social media and published a long letter in left leaning major newspapers around the world. In it, Lula laments the decline of multilateralism to solve conflicts. He adds, it's imperative to fortify institutions that are, quote, capable of responding to the cries of a humanity that fears for its future. Trump says Brazil will get a 50% tariff because of its prosecution of former President Jair Bolsonaro, who's facing charges of plotting a coup to stay in power. Trump says it's a witch hunt. Friday, Trump said maybe he'll talk with Lula, but added Bolsonaro is, quote, an honest guy. Carrie Khan, NPR News, Rio de Janeiro.

Stocks closed lower across the board on Friday following President Trump's renewal of his trade war. Both the S&P 500 and the NASDAQ closed below record highs set on Thursday. The S and p was down 0.33% while the Nasdaq closed down 0.22%. The Dow, meanwhile, was down just over 0.6%. This is NPR News. The energy sector is looking to Wyoming this weekend. That's where the nation's first rare earth mine in decades is breaking ground. From Wyoming Public Radio, Caitlin Tan reports.
Caitlin Tan
It's a novel concept. Ramaco Resources will mine coal in order to get to the rare minerals. CEO Randy Atkins says they bought an old coal mine back in 2011.
Christi
We figured out pretty soon that the market was shifting and it was difficult to justify economically putting in a new utility focused thermal coal mine.
Caitlin Tan
Then they realized they were sitting on large deposits of rare earth minerals, which are needed for national defense and semiconductors. Right now, China dominates the market, so the company shifted. US Energy Secretary Chris Wright is in town for the groundbreaking of the rare earth mine. For NPR News, I'm Caitlin Tan in Ranchester, Wyoming.

The price of the cryptocurrency bitcoin continues to move up. On Friday, its price topped $118,000 for the first time. The record was reached as a large amount of money continues to move into spot Bitcoin ETFs. The soft US dollar and the digital friendly approach of the Trump administration has helped bitcoin with its rapid rise. Prosecutors in France are investigating charges of alleged data tampering and fraud in involving Elon Musk's social media platform X. They say police are investigating charges from earlier in the year from two government officials that the platform's algorithm is being used for foreign interference. No details into those charges, though, have been released. I'm Dale Willman, NPR News.
