Canada is responding to President Trump's decision to raise tariffs on some Canadian goods to 35% on August 1. Minister of Industry Melanie Jolie says Canada has already done much to challenge Trump.
Melanie Jolie
Canada is the only country on earth, along with China, that has imposed so many counterterroriffs. So we have had already a very strong response. And we want to make sure that while we are putting pressure on the American administration that at the same time we're creating well, first we're protecting jobs while creating jobs.

Canada's prime minister, meanwhile, says negotiations with the US Will continue. The state of Virginia is looking to artificial intelligence for helping and reducing regulations. And as Jed Khalil from member station VPM reports, Republican Governor Glenn Youngkin says it's the first type of program of its kind in the country.
Jed Khalil
Earlier this week, Youngkin was touting reducing 25% of Virginia's regulations. He also pointed out that artificial intelligence played a role in helping. Now he's ordered Virginia's regulatory office to issue AI generated reports on all of Virginia's regulations. State employees are supposed to use AI to do a legal review and look at nearby states in an effort to compete for new business. Just reducing the number of words and guidance is a goal, too. Executive agencies will have eight weeks from receiving the report to start implementing recommendations. This is Youngkin's last year in office, and he wants to reduce regulations by more than a third by the time he leaves in January. For NPR News, I'M Jad Khalil in Richmond.

A preliminary report into the June crash of an air India Boeing 787 that killed 260 people has been released in. It indicates that the plane's engine fuel cutoff switches were flipped at almost the same time, causing a loss of fuel to the engines. CCTV footage shows that almost immediately after the plane lifted off the ground, a backup energy source called a RAM turbine had deployed, which would also indicate a loss of power from the engines. You're listening to NPR News. Ford is recalling more than 800,000 trucks and SUVs because the fuel pump can fail and cause the engine to stall while driving. It's not the first recall for Ford this year. And as NPR's Camilla Dominoski reports, a remedy is still being developed.

The Wall Street Journal did the math and found that in the first six months of the year, Ford had 88 safety recalls. That's more than any company has had in a single year, and the year's only half over. In a statement to npr, Ford said that the company has, quote, significantly improved product quality. Ford says it's doing more testing and finding issues in older vehicles, including issues not even reported by any customers, and that the increase in recalls ref this strategy. You can check if your vehicle is covered by a recall@nhtsa.gov or the government's Safer Car app. Camila Dominoski, NPR News.
