Live from NPR News. In Washington, I'm Jeanine Herbst. Mexico says the proposed new tariffs by President Trump are unfair. NPR's Ada Peralta reports. Officials say they're in negotiations to stop them from going into effect.

Mexico's economy Minister Marcelo Ebrard was in Washington on Friday meeting with U.S. officials, says they were already negotiating on economic issues as well as security and migration. Saturday, President Trump said he intended to slap 30% tariffs on Mexican imports. Ebrar called the move unfair and said they hope to reach an alternative understanding before August 1, when the tariffs are supposed to go into effect. Trump has threatened similar tariffs in the past, but every time he's walked away from them. Indeed, census data and Mexican government data shows the vast majority of Mexican imports to the US Continue to pay zero tariffs. Ada Peralta, NPR News, Mexico City.

Meanwhile, Trump says he will also impose a 30% tariff on the European Union. He acknowledged a close relationship with both Mexico and the eu, but says the trade deficit with the euro is too high. It also takes effect August 1st. The White House is downplaying reports of friction between Attorney General Pam Bondi and Deputy FBI Director dan Bongino. As NPR's Tamara Keith reports, the White House spokesperson is describing unity between the two.

NPR hasn't independently confirmed the reports, but multiple news outlets say Bongino and Bondi are at loggerheads over the Jeffrey Epstein files. Epstein was a sex offender who the Justice Department says died by suicide while in federal custody. Many in Trump's MAGA base, outraged that more evidence hasn't been released, are taking sides in the reported Bongino Bondi feud. In a statement, White House spokesman Harrison Fields says President Trump has assembled a highly qualified team whose work is, quote, being carried out seamlessly and with unity, adding that any attempt to sow division within this team is baseless. A six year long fight is coming to an end as the Conservation Fund, a national nonprofit, finalizes a $60 million purchase of about 8,000 acres near the Okefenokee Swamp. Alabama based Twin Pines Minerals owned the ridge next to the swamp and applied for permits with the state of Georgia in 2019 to mine titanium dioxide, a whitening pigment used in paints and foods. Scientists argued digging into the ridge along the swamp would lower the already very shallow water levels and dry up fire prone areas. The sale is set to be completed July 31st. For NPR News, I'm Marissa Mecke in Atlanta, Georgia.

A preliminary report on the deadly Air India crash last month raises questions on the position of the critical engine fuel cutoff switches cutting off fuel to the engines, but it doesn't say how the switches could have flipped during the flight. The Air India plane, a Boeing 7878 Dreamliner carrying 230 passengers and 12 crew members, was on its way to the UK when it crashed into a building shortly after takeoff June 12, killing all but one person on board and several people on the ground. The flight lasted around 30 seconds between takeoff and the crash. On Jeanine Herbst, NPR News, in Washington.
