Rated R. Live from NPR News in Washington, I'm Jeanine Herbst. A Senate committee says there were multiple preventable failures at the Secret Service before the assassination attempt against President Trump last summer. NPR's Joe Hernandez has more.

The Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee blamed the Secret Service for a communication breakdown before and during the Pennsylvania rally. According to the committee, there were reports of a suspicious person with a rangefinder 25 minutes before the shooting, but that information didn't make it to Trump's detail before he took the stage. Trump and two others were wounded in the shooting, and one rally goer was killed. A Secret Service sniper shot and killed the perpetrator. In a statement, Secret Service Director Sean Curran said the agency has been taking steps to address failures that occurred during the attack last July, including streamlining the agency's communication procedures. In Kerrville, Texas, flash flood warnings returned as strong rains hit the area, forcing crews to temporarily stop their search for the more than 160 people still missing from the deadly July 4th floods. At least 128 people died. Steve Futterman has more.

It was the strongest downpour here since July 4th, and very quickly officials stepped in the bringing to a halt search and rescue efforts. Along with debris removal, there were some reports of flooding. Some streets were shut down, but nothing even close to approaching the historic flood surge that has killed so many. Still, after what this area has experienced, people were understandably nervous. Like Patty Stark from nearby Red Rock.

Texas, some of my thoughts were, should we just go back home and get back out of the way? But it seems to have cleared up enough.

Officials have come under criticism for not issuing alerts early enough on July 4th. This time, early alerts were sent to phones, and in some areas, authorities went door to door. For NPR News, I'm Steve Futterman.

In Kerrville, Texas, a 5,000acre wildfire has shot down a portion of Grand Canyon national park and destroyed a historic lodge. From member station KNU, Adrian Skabiland reports. It's 0% contained.

The wind driven Dragon Bravo fire jumped containment lines on the park's north rim Saturday night. Within hours, it grew 500 acres, destroying more than 50 structures, including the lodge, which dates back to the late 1930s. Park officials say the fire also burned the water treatment facility, releasing poisonous chlorine gas and forcing firefighters to pull back. Officials have evacuated several trails and the iconic Phantom Ranch as gas poured into the canyon. The North Rim is closed for the season while the popular South Rim remains open. This is the second wildfire burning in the area. Last week, officials evacuated close to 500 visitors and nearly 1,000 square miles nearby due to the White Sage fire to the north. You're listening to NPR News from Washington. The world's top ranked tennis player Jannik Sinner is the winner of Wimbledon. His four set win over Carlos Alcaraz is the latest chapter in the rivalry between the two young players. NPR's Becky Sullivan has more.

Sunday's final was a rematch of last month's epic French Open final, which the 22 year old Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz won after a five and a half hour long duel. This time it was center's day. His powerful shot sent Alcaraz running this way and that and the trophy was his after four sets. 4, 6, 6, 4, 6, 4, 6, four. Afterwards, Sinner applauded his opponent.

The differences are very small and the margins are very tiny and things what went his way in Paris went my way this time.
Becky Sullivan
Sinner and Alcaraz are the world's two top ranked players. Over the past year, they've put serious distance between themselves and the rest of the field. Between them, the pair has won the last seven straight Grand Slam titles. Becky Sullivan, NPR News.

The osprey population came back from the brink once, but now chicks are dying in their nests and some people blame overfishing of Manhattan, an important food source for the birds of prey. The osprey is a fish eating raptor known for gymnastic dives and whistle like chirps. And it's an American conservation success story. The hawk like bird rebounded after DDT was banned and now numbers in the thousands across the country. But now birds are failing to successfully fledge enough chicks around the key population center, the Chesapeake Bay on the Eastern Shore. I'm Jeanine Herbst, NPR News in Washington.
