Live from NPR News in Washington, I'm Jeanine Herbst. One year ago, a would be assassin shot at then presidential candidate Donald Trump during a campaign rally in Butler Pen, Pennsylvania. Today, a Senate committee released its final report on the assassination attempt. NPR's Luke Garrett has more.

In the weeks before the shooting, the Secret Service denied at least 10 additional security requests for Trump's 2024 campaign, according to the Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Government Affairs. GOP Senator Rand Paul of Kentucky led the report and says a pattern of communication failures allowed for the would be assassin to fire shots towards Trump and the crowd. Paul tells CBS News, no one took responsibility for these failures.
Rand Paul
When we talked to the people in charge of security, everybody pointed a finger at someone else.
Luke Garrett
Paul says we may never know why the assassination attempt was made.
Rand Paul
I think we aren't going to know the motive and I take that at face value.
Luke Garrett
The 20 year old gunman killed one rally goer and wounded two others before he was killed by a Secret Service sniper. Luke Garrett, NPR News, Washington.

Jennifer Stewart packed up a car Thursday and drove five hours from her north Dallas suburb to Kerrville with a massage table. As she gave massages to rescue workers outside the local vfw, she heard about the things they've seen. One man said he helped pull a body from beneath sediment and debris. Stewart's emotions caught up with her when it was time to pack up Friday.
Jennifer Stewart
Just imagining like and hearing stories today of of the bodies and the animals and the belongings of people that they will never see again. And it's just heartbreaking. It is.
James Hartley
She says there are more ways to lend a hand in Kerrville than most people realize and hopes folks will look for ways to share their skills. For NPR News, I'm James Hartley in Kerrville.

The Israeli military is blaming what it calls a technical error for an airstrike in central Gaza that's reported to have killed 10 Palestinians. The BBC's Nick Beek reports most of those at the Nurasreet refugee camp were.
Nick Beek
Children, eyewitnesses said a drone fired a missile at a crowd waiting to collect water. Graphic videos showed dead children and adults. The Israeli military said it had been targeting someone it called an Islamic Jihad terrorist, but a technical error meant the munition fell dozens of meters from the target. The IDF said it regrets any harm to uninvolved civilians. It comes a day after 31 people were killed at an aid distribution site in southern Gaza, according to the Red Cross. The United nations says 800 people have been killed in the past seven weeks while trying to get aid.

The BBC's Nick Beek reporting. You're listening to NPR News from Washington. Italy's Jannik Sinner is the Wimbledon's men's singles champion. NPR's Kristen Wright reports. It's the 23 year old's first Wimbledon glory.
Kristen Wright
Sinner is the first Italian to ever win a Wimbledon singles title. He defeated two time defending champion Carlos Alcaraz of Spain on Sunday in four competitive sets. Accepting his trophy, Sinner described the victory as a dream come true.
Jannik Sinner
Every moment can change the match. So I'm very happy that I hold my nerves. And yeah, so it's an amazing feeling.
Kristen Wright
It was a rematch of the French Open last month when Sinner lost to Alcaraz, who'd made a dramatic comeback in the five and a half hour duel. This time, Sinner sealed his victory with an ace to win it all. Kristen Wright, NPR News.

Sotheby's is putting some rare items up for auction this week, including what it calls the largest piece of Mars ever found on Earth. The natural history themed sale on Wednesday features a 54 pound hunk of Mars estimated at 2 to 4 million dollars. Cassand Hatton is with Sotheby's.
Cassand Hatton
This Martian meteorite is more than double the size of what we previously thought was the largest piece of Mars. Now, we've only taken a small piece of it to study to confirm that it was Martian, but there's all sorts of interesting data that can be found inside of this rock.
Jeanine Herbst
She says the meteorite was blown off the surface of Mars by a massive asteroid strike and traveled 140 miles to Earth, where it was found in the Sahara and Niger in 2023. I'm Jeanine Herbst, NPR News, in Washington.
