Live from NPR News. I'm Dale Wilman. President Trump says he'll be meeting with the secretary general of NATO on Monday. Among the topics they will discuss is military aid for Ukraine. Before his election, Trump said he could quickly end the war between the two countries because of his relationship with Russia's president. But now he says he's frustrated with the lack of movement toward peace.
Donald Trump
I am very disappointed with President Putin. You know, I thought he was somebody that meant what he said. And he'll talk so beautifully and then he'll bomb people at night. We don't like that.
Dale Willman
Trump also says he's sending Patriot missiles to Ukraine. The European Union is pushing back the planned start date for retaliatory tariffs, but officials say they stand ready to react to President Trump's threat to enact 30% tariffs on EU imports.
Terry Schultz
Terry Schultz reports the EU believed trade talks with the US were making progress on a solution which would avoid the tariffs Trump has announced will go into effect August 1st if no agreement is reached. European Commission chief Ursula von der Leyen says the EU will hold off for now, imposing the tit for tat tariffs that would have started Monday.
Ursula von der Leyen
We will use the time we have now till the 1st of August. We can respond with countermeasures if necessary.
Terry Schultz
Von der Leyen says it's too early to say whether the bloc would consider using its anti coercion instrument regulation, which allows the EU to seek reparations for economic damages. But she says the measure's existence shows the EU is prepared for all eventual scenarios. For NPR News, I'm Terry Schultz in Brussels.

Two women were killed in a church in Lexington, Kentucky, on Sunday. Police later shot and killed the suspect. Officials say the incident began when a state trooper was shot and wounded after stopping a car. The driver then carjacked a vehicle and traveled to the church and opened fire. A Senate committee says there were multiple preventable failures at the Secret Service before the assassination attempt against President Trump last summer. NPR's Joe Hernandez has more.

The Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee blamed the Secret Service for a communication breakdown before and during the Pennsylvania rally. According to the committee, there were reports of a suspicious person with a rangefinder 25 minutes before the shooting, but that information didn't make it to Trump's detail before he took the stage. Trump and two others were wounded in the shooting, and one rally goer was killed. A Secret Service sniper shot and killed the perpetrator. In a statement, Secret Service Director Sean Curran said the agency has been taking steps to address the failures that occurred during the attack last July, including streamlining the agency's communication procedures. Emergency crews temporarily suspended their search for more victims from last weekend's flooding because new storms threatened even more flooding in the region. They're looking for more than 160 people who are still missing in Kerr county alone. The storm also killed at 132 people. Former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari led the country twice as military head of state, has died at the age of 82. You're listening to NPR News. Israeli strikes in the Gaza Strip killed at least 32 people on Sunday, including six children. The attack occurred at a water collection point. Gaza's health ministry says the number of Palestinians killed during 21 months of fighting has now reached more than 58,000 people. Israel and Hamas, meanwhile, appear to be no closer to a ceasefire agreement. Despite ongoing indirect talks, the movie reboot of Superman is achieving super sized box office results. NPR's Bob Mondello has our details.

Hey, quit messing around.
James Gunn
I'm not messing around. I'm doing important stuff.

There was some concern that the director referring in an interview to Superman, who was born on another planet as an immigrant, might be box office kryptonite in red states. But the entertainment analysis firm Intelligence reports that the film's reception in all regions of the US has been right in line with that of most PG13 family adventure films. President Trump's Upcoming NATO Meeting
NPR host Dale Willman reports that President Donald Trump announced his upcoming meeting with the Secretary General of NATO scheduled for Monday. A primary agenda for this meeting is the discussion of military aid for Ukraine. This development marks a shift from Trump's pre-election stance, where he claimed he could swiftly end the conflict between Ukraine and Russia due to his rapport with Russian President Vladimir Putin. However, Trump has recently expressed frustration over the stagnation in peace negotiations.

Patriotic Missile Deployment and Potential Tariffs
Trump further stated his intention to send Patriot missiles to Ukraine, signaling increased military support. Concurrently, tensions between the United States and the European Union (EU) are escalating over trade issues. The EU is currently delaying the implementation of retaliatory tariffs in response to Trump’s threat to impose 30% tariffs on EU imports. Tragic Incident in Lexington, Kentucky
A severe incident occurred in Lexington, Kentucky, where two women lost their lives in a church shooting on Sunday. The situation escalated when police shot and killed the suspect after the incident began with a state trooper being shot and wounded during a traffic stop. The driver subsequently carjacked a vehicle, headed to the church, and opened fire.
Congressional Review of Secret Service Failures
A Senate committee has highlighted multiple preventable failures by the Secret Service related to the assassination attempt on President Trump last summer. NPR's Joe Hernandez reports that the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee identified a communication breakdown as a critical issue. Specifically, reports of a suspicious individual with a rangefinder 25 minutes before the shooting did not reach Trump's security detail promptly, leading to vulnerabilities during the Pennsylvania rally where Trump and others were injured.
Notable Quotes:
“According to the committee, there were reports of a suspicious person with a rangefinder 25 minutes before the shooting, but that information didn't make it to Trump's detail before he took the stage.”

Severe Flooding in Kerr County
Emergency response efforts have been partially suspended in Kerr County due to impending storms that threaten to exacerbate the region's flooding. As rescue operations continue, more than 160 individuals remain missing, with the overall death toll from the storms reaching 132.
Passing of Former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari
Former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari, who twice led the country as a military head of state, has passed away at the age of 82. Buhari was a significant figure in Nigeria's political landscape, and his death marks the end of an era for the nation.
Israeli Strikes in Gaza
Recent Israeli military actions in the Gaza Strip have resulted in the deaths of at least 32 individuals, including six children. The attacks targeted a water collection point, intensifying the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas. Gaza's health ministry has reported that the death toll among Palestinians has surpassed 58,000 over the past 21 months of fighting. Despite indirect negotiations, there appears to be little progress toward a ceasefire agreement.
Box Office Success of Superman Reboot
