Live from NPR News in Washington, I'm Windsor Johnston. House Speaker Mike Johnson is calling for the release of Justice Department files for the late convicted sex offender Jeffre Epstein. NPR's Claudia Grosales reports. Johnson's break with President Trump and Attorney General Pam Bondi has escalated tensions splitting the Republican Party.
Mike Johnson
House Speaker Mike Johnson called for the release of the Epstein files during an interview with conservative podcaster Benny Johnson, saying it's time to put the controversy behind.
Benny Johnson
Them, put everything out there and let the people decide it. I mean, the White House and the White House team are privy to facts that I don't know. I mean, this isn't my lane. I haven't been involved in that. But I agree with the sentiment that.
Mike Johnson
We need to put it out there, johnson said. Attorney General Pam Bondi needs to explain statements defending the refusal to release additional information related to Epstein. House Democrats have seized on the debate to force procedural votes to release the files, drawing GOP support in some instances. Claudia Grizales, NPR News, the Capitol.

The Trump administration says it's scaling back the National Guard's presence in Los Angeles. NPR's Elena Moore reports reports the move comes after Trump deployed more than 4,000 troops to the city last month in response to protests over immigration raids.
Sean Parnell
A U.S. official has confirmed to NPR that about 2,000 National Guard troops are being released from service in LA. The official adds that the other 2,000 will remain in the city along with 700 Marines. In a statement from chief Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell, he praised the troops for their service and said that, quote, the lawlessness in Los Angeles is subsiding. Opponents of Trump's decision to deploy troops argued it was an abuse of power. However, a federal appeals court later ruled that the president was in fact allowed to temporarily control the state's National Guard. Elena Moore, NPR News, Washington.

Inflation ticked up 2.7% from a year ago. That's the latest figure released today by the Commerce Department. NPR's Scott Horsley reports. President Trump's tariff advantage agenda is making it hard to bring the cost of living down.
Scott Horsley
Even if tariffs remain at their current level, though, which is the highest in nearly a century, there will continue to be upward pressure on prices, and that's why investors expect the Federal Reserve to hold interest rates steady when policymakers meet in a couple of weeks. Markets are betting the Fed will start to cut interest rates in September. President Trump and his allies have been jawboning the central bank, insisting the rate should be lower. But as we learned today, Trump's own tariffs are making it harder for the Fed to get inflation under control.

That's NPR's Scott Horsley reporting. At the close on Wall street today, the Dow Jones industrial Average was down 436 points, the NASDAQ composite up 37, the S&P down 24. This is NPR News in Washington. A number of states in the Northeast are cleaning up after severe flooding overnight in New Jersey, Heavy rain swept across the region, stranding buses and cars, flooding major roadways. Governor Phil Murphy is warning residents to prepare for additional rain over the we're.

In one of these patterns right now, hot, humid, late afternoon, early evening thunderstorms. It doesn't feel as I stand here now, but you never say never.

Parts of New York City are also dealing with the aftermath of heavy rain. In cold rooms around the world, emergency vaccines are stored for use in case of an outbreak. There are Ebola vaccines. One is for yellow fever, cholera and meningitis. But it's long been a question about whether these stockpiles are worth the effort and money. NPR's Gabrielle Emanuel reports. A new study helps answer that question.
Gabrielle Emanuel
Researchers looked at more than 200 outbreaks over the past 20 some years. These are health emergencies in which authorities used the stockpiled vaccines for immunization campaigns, and they found these vaccines reduced deaths by 60%. Nick Scott was a co author in the study published in the British medical journal Global Health.
Nick Scott
These vaccines are really critical for preventing things like school closures, business closures, travel restrictions.
Gabrielle Emanuel
He says that the faster vaccines were used, the easier it was to keep the outbreak small and make sure it didn't cross international borders. Gabriela Emanuel, NPR News.
