Live from NPR News, I'm Lakshmi Singh. President Trump denies reports that he plans to fire Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell. He said he talked about the concept of firing him with a group of Republican lawmakers last night and they said he should. At the White House today, a reporter asked President Trump whether he had now ruled out firing Powell.
Donald Trump (0:39)
I don't rule out anything, but I think it's highly unlikely unless he has to leave for fraud. I mean, it's possible there's fraud involved with the $2.5 $2.7 billion renovation. This is a renovation.

Trump has accused Powell of mismanaging the central bank's massive headquarters renovation project. He's criticized Powell as well for not lowering interest rates. Trump answered questions about recent reports of him considering the firing during an Oval Office pool spray with the prime minister and crown prince of Bahrain. The Labor Department reported that wholesale prices held steady last month. NPR's Scott Horsley reports. The Dow Jones industrial average is now up 148points at 44,171.

Wholesale prices barely budged between May and June. The wholesale price of goods jumped during the month, but that was offset by the falling price of services over the last 12 months. Wholesale prices are up 2.3%. The news comes a day after the Labor Department reported a jump in inflation at the retail level last month, which is fueled in part by President Trump's double digit tariffs. Stock in Johnson and Johnson rose after the company reported better than expected quarterly profits. JJ also raised its forecast for the full year. The drug and medical device maker says it expects some game changing approvals in the second half of the year. Asian stocks were mostly down overnight. Scott Horsley, NPR News, Washington.
