Details@capitalone.com Live from NPR News in Washington, I'm Nour Ram. The rescission package that President Trump is signing into law cuts about a billion dollars that was previously approved for the United Nations. That includes money for UN peacekeeping as well as the UN's Children's Fund. NPR's Michelle Kellerman reports.

The spending the White House is canceling includes $361 million for UN peacekeeping operations. Peter Yeoh of the Better World campaign calls that ironic.
Peter Yeoh
President Trump just announced a new peace deal between Rwanda and Congo, and the UN peacekeeping mission is incredibly important to implementation of this deal.
Michelle Kellerman
Yeoh, who advocates for the UN, is also worried about a $142 million cut to the UN's Children's Fund. Republicans say they're just cutting overhead, but UNICEF says this was critical and flexible funding that allowed it to help children in humanitarian disasters and conflicts. The State Department, the Environmental Protection Agency intends to dismantle its research wing that assesses the impact of air pollution on the public. NPR's Alejandra Barunda has more.

EPA's Office of Research and Development has been part of the agency since the 1970s. Congress asked the agency to create the wing to research environmental risks the agency might regulate. Its scientists figured out things like how air pollution hurts human health and how pollutants like PFAS and affect plants, animals and humans. Their work informs regulations. Earlier this year, the Trump administration announced its intention to reorganize EPA and potentially shutter ord. EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin announced Friday the agency will move forward with that plan. Critics say shuttering the office would disembowel the agency's ability to work on environmental and human health. The agency says it will have shrunk its workforce by more than 3,700 employees after the reorganization is complete. Alejandra Varunda, NPR News.

The Los Angeles Police Department is investigating a crash along a busy boulevard in East Hollywood early this morning. A car rammed into a crowd of people waiting to get into a nightclub. Captain Adam Van Gerben with the city Fire Department says more than two dozen people were injured.
Peter Yeoh
The scene when they got on, when they arrived was very chaotic. Ultimately, there ended up being a total of 30 patients. So out of those 30 patients, seven of them were critical, what we call immediate.

The car also hit a valet stand in a taco truck. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky says Russia launched another major attack overnight with more than 300 drones and more than 30 cruise missiles. One person died in the black seaport city of Odessa, where an apartment building was hit. You're listening to NPR News in Washington. The Polish Interior Ministry says it's investigating an air traffic control outage at the main airport in Warsaw that disrupted operations for a time today. Polish air officials say it was a problem that was promptly resolved. Takeoff and landing operations have resumed. Crews continue to battle a wildfire on the north rim of Grand Canyon national park that destroyed an historic lodge. Ryan Hindjas of member station KNAU reports.

Managers on the Dragon Bravo fire say lower temperatures and higher humidity have moderated fire behavior in recent days. More than 600 personnel are trying to take advantage of the conditions before a weather shift this weekend. Stephan Laskay is a spokesperson for the incident management team.

The issue we're facing now is we're getting a return to the hotter, drier weather. We're all on our toes expecting more fire movement.
Ryan Hindjas
Lightning sparked the Dragon bravo fire on July 4th. Officials initially allowed parts of the blaze to burn, but it later exploded in size amid heavy winds and burned more than 70 North Rim structures, including the historic Grand Canyon Lodge. For NPR News, I'm Ryan Huinschis in Flagstaff.

Delta Air Lines has been testing artificial intelligence to set ticket prices. In a recent call with shareholders, officials said it's proven amazingly favorable. It's based not on market conditions, but what the bot thinks the passenger may be willing to pay. It's currently used to a set about 3% of ticket prices. The company hopes to expand the strategy to 20% by the end of the year. I'm Nora Ramm, NPR News.
