Live from NPR News in Washington, I'm Nora Ramm. President Trump is suing the Wall Street Journal and its Rupert Murdoch for more than $10 billion. He says the paper defamed him by publishing a story that he sent a sexually suggestive birthday note to Jeffrey Epstein, the disgraced financier, more than 20 years ago. The paper is standing by the story. Meanwhile, the Trump administration is now seeking the release of some grand jury transcripts in the Epstein sexual trafficking case. NPR's Ryan Lucas reports. This story is not going away.
Pam Bondi
Trump himself, of course, did say during the campaign that he was in favor of releasing Epstein's purported cl. And once he was back in office, his attorney general, Pam Bondi, promised transparency on this. She hyped the release of a first batch of Epstein files in February. Everything in that batch, by and large, turned out to already have been known. She took some heat over that, but Bondi's own public statements have certainly contributed to the blowback that we've seen.

NPR's Ryan Lucas. Los Angeles police are trying to determine what led a man to slam his car into a crowd and outside an East Hollywood nightclub early this morning. Steve Butterman reports.
Steve Futterman
The vehicle crashed into people gathered here outside the Vermont Club around 2am Some suffered critical injuries. Among those struck were vendors selling food items on carts. Los Angeles police Officer Jerry Lee says detectives still have not determined a motive.

What caused this driver to plow into this crowd? Was it intentional? Was it not intentional? Was it DUI related? Was it personal?
Steve Futterman
Witnesses say the driver had been asked to leave the club shortly before the incident. After the crash, the driver was pulled from the car and beaten. There was also a shot fired that hit the driver. For NPR News, I'm Steve Futterman in East Hollywood, California.

It was another week of records on Wall street, with both the S and P and NASDAQ finishing higher for the week after setting all time highs. NPR's Rafael Naam reports.

Despite concerns that President Trump will impose a new set of tariffs on August 1, stocks continue to gain. That was in large part thanks to a number of good earnings this week. Big companies such as PepsiCo and banks like JPMorgan Chase announced positive quarterly results. The earnings so far are raising optimism about the economy. And even with the uncertainty over Trump's tariffs, however, there are some signs that the import levies are having an economic impact. Data this week showed consumer prices rising 2.7% from a year ago, higher than the previous month. Rafael Nam, NPR News.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky says Russia launched another major attack overnight with more than 300 drones and more than 30 cruise missiles. One person died and six others were wounded when an apartment building was hit in the Black Sea port of Odessa. This is NPR News. Gaza health officials say at least 72 Palestinians were killed by the Israeli military across Gaza today. This includes more than 30 people trying to get food at U S backed distribution sites. The non profit Common Sense Media surveyed American teenagers and found three quarters of them have used artificial intelligence for companionship such as chatting, advice seeking and flirting. One quarter have given out private information. Common Sense advises against this, saying AI companies do not necessarily have the teen's well being in mind. Federal lawmakers are proposing legislation to regulate the cosmetics industry. As NPR's Rachel Treisman reports, they want to label and ban toxic chemicals in beauty products.
Rachel Treisman
A group of Democrats introduced a set of four bills aimed at making beauty products safer. They would ban certain hazardous chemicals, require companies to disclose them, and take steps to protect the women of color and salon workers who are disproportionately exposed to them. A growing body of research has found chemicals like formaldehyde, mercury and lead in many personal care products and linked them to health issues including cancer and reproductive harm. Federal regulation has been slow, prompting states like Vermont and California to issue their own bans. Rachel Treisman, NPR News.

In a significant legal move, President Donald Trump has initiated a lawsuit against The Wall Street Journal and its owner, Rupert Murdoch, seeking over $10 billion in damages. The basis of the lawsuit centers on allegations of defamation related to a published story that claimed Trump sent a sexually suggestive birthday note to Jeffrey Epstein, the disgraced financier, more than two decades ago.

This legal action underscores the ongoing tensions between Trump and major media outlets, particularly concerning the Epstein scandal.
Simultaneously, the Trump administration is intensifying its pursuit of transparency by seeking the release of grand jury transcripts in the Epstein sexual trafficking case. This move aims to shed more light on the intricate details of the case, although NPR's Ryan Lucas highlights that "this story is not going away" [00:25], indicating prolonged legal and political battles ahead.
Related Commentary: Pam Bondi, the Attorney General under Trump, has been a vocal advocate for transparency in the Epstein case. Despite promising to release Epstein’s files, the initial batch released in February revealed information largely already known, leading to public criticism and further complicating the administration's stance.
Early Tuesday morning, a harrowing incident unfolded outside the Vermont Club in East Hollywood. A man drove his vehicle into a crowd gathering near the nightclub at approximately 2 AM, resulting in multiple injuries.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky reported a significant escalation in the ongoing conflict, with Russia launching a large-scale attack using over 300 drones and more than 30 cruise missiles. This development heightens tensions in the region and underscores the volatile security situation in Eastern Europe.
In Gaza, health officials have reported that Israeli military operations have resulted in at least 72 Palestinian deaths today. Tragically, more than 30 of these casualties occurred among individuals attempting to obtain food at U.S.-backed distribution sites.
A recent survey by Common Sense Media reveals that 75% of American teenagers have engaged with artificial intelligence for companionship purposes, such as chatting, seeking advice, and flirting. Concurrently, 25% of these young users have shared private information with AI platforms.
Concerns Highlighted: Common Sense Media cautions against this trend, emphasizing that "AI companies do not necessarily have the teen's well-being in mind." This raises significant questions about data privacy and the psychological impacts of AI interactions on youth.
Federal lawmakers are taking strides to enhance the safety of beauty products by introducing a series of legislative measures aimed at regulating the cosmetics industry.

This move comes in response to mounting research linking various chemicals in personal care products to severe health issues, including cancer and reproductive harm. With federal regulation lagging, states like Vermont and California have already implemented their own bans, setting a precedent for nationwide change.
In a heartwarming turn of events, a mother and her nine-year-old son were safely rescued after being lost in a remote California forest while en route to a Boy Scout camp.
