Live from NPR News in Washington, I'm Nora Ramm. Texas officials now say there are three people missing after the floods and Hill country on the 4th of July, down from nearly 100 at at least 135 people died. The state legislature begins a 30 day special session tomorrow to consider disaster relief and how to better prepare for disasters. Republican lawmakers will also push to redraw the state's congressional map, which is not usually done in the middle of a decade. The Texas Newsroom's Blaise Gainey has more.
Blaise Gainey
Typically states redraw districts at the top of the decade once the population estimates from the census are released. But President Trump has urged Texas to redraw those congressional lines ahead of the midterm elections. He believes there's at least five more seats the U.S. for the U.S. house here. And the Justice Department has said that most of those come from what looks like constitutional gerrymandering right now in heavy Democratic voting blocks around Houston.

Police believe the suspect, 29 year old Fernando Ramirez, became enraged when he was told to leave the nightclub. Initially he began driving away, but then allegedly made a sudden U turn and crashed his car into dozens of people. Angry bystanders pulled him from the vehicle and began beating him. Ramirez was also shot in the buttocks. Los Angeles police officer Jeffrey Lee, the.

Police have ordered Ramirez detained on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon. Formal criminal charges could come from the district attorney in the upcoming week. For NPR News, I'm Steve Futterman in East Hollywood, California.

Brazil's president is criticizing the Trump administration for pressuring Brazil's judiciary to drop a criminal case against the country's ex President Brady. NPR's Carrie Khan has more on the story from Rio de Janeiro.

Brazil's President Luis Ignacio Lula da Silva says the visa revocations are, quote, arbitrary and completely unfounded. On his official social media accounts, Lula wrote, I am certain that no form of intimidation or threat will compromise Brazil's mission to defend and uphold the democratic rule of law. Friday, U.S. secretary of State Marco Rubio announced the visa restrictions for multiple Supreme Court justices, their family members and, quote, allies. The U.S. s main target, according to Rubio, is Justice Alejandro de Moraes. Moraes is leading the case of former far right President Jair Bolsonaro, a Trump ally. Bolsonaro is facing charges he tried to overturn his 2022 reelection loss and plotted a coup to stay in power. Carrie Kahn, NPR News, Rio de Janeiro.

This is NPR News in Washington. A US Brokered ceasefire in Syria appears to be holding. It's estimated hundreds died last week in clashes, Sunni, Bedouins and militias of the Druze religious minority. Now that the fighting has stopped, humanitarian groups have begun sending in trucks with food, medicine and water. The Palestinian Health Ministry says at least 94 people were killed by Israeli military fire today as they were waiting for food at aid distribution sites in Gaza. Local health officials say hundreds of people have died in recent months trying to get food. The Trump administration is calling on Americans to have more babies, but in some states, advocates and parents say they need more support with the babies already being born starting at birth. NPR's Katia Brittle reports.
Katia Brittle
Trust in medical institutions is on the decline across the country, and people are looking for safe alternatives to hospitals to have their babies. But in some states, that's hard to find. Katie Chubb has been trying to open a birth center in Augusta for years. She says not enough care is paid to maternal and child outcomes.
Katie Chubb
It's a massive concern here in Georgia, where we're so focused on being pro life, but yet we're not caring about the life.

Past 20 weeks, Chubb hasn't been successful yet in opening her birth center, but she says she's not giving up. Katie Ariddle, NPR News.

Texas is grappling with the aftermath of devastating floods that struck the Hill Country on the 4th of July. Initially, nearly 100 individuals were reported missing, but officials have since updated the numbers, confirming that three people remain unaccounted for while the death toll has risen to at least 135.
In response to this disaster, the Texas state legislature is set to convene a 30-day special session starting tomorrow. The primary agenda includes deliberating on disaster relief measures and strategies to enhance future preparedness for such calamities. Amidst these discussions, Republican lawmakers are also advocating for the redrawing of the state's congressional map—a move that is atypical mid-decade. This push is influenced by President Trump's call to reshape the districts ahead of the upcoming midterm elections. He argues that Texas could secure "at least five more seats in the U.S. House" (Timestamp: [00:49]). The Justice Department has raised concerns, highlighting that the proposed changes may constitute constitutional gerrymandering, particularly targeting Democratic strongholds around Houston.

A disturbing incident unfolded in Los Angeles as a suspect deliberately rammed his vehicle into a crowd outside a Hollywood nightclub. Authorities believe that Fernando Ramirez, a 29-year-old man, acted with intent after becoming enraged when he was asked to leave the establishment. Initial reports indicate that Ramirez attempted to drive away but then executed a sudden U-turn, resulting in his car crashing into dozens of people.
The violent scene escalated as bystanders intervened, pulling Ramirez from the vehicle and assaulting him. In the chaos, Ramirez sustained injuries, including a gunshot wound to the buttocks. Los Angeles Police Officer Jeffrey Lee provided an update, stating, "Suspect in the shooting is still outstanding. We consider him armed and dangerous and possibly carrying a silver revolver" (Timestamp: [01:49]).
Law enforcement has ordered Ramirez's detention on charges of assault with a deadly weapon, and formal criminal charges are anticipated from the district attorney in the upcoming week.

Brazilian President Luis Ignacio Lula da Silva has openly criticized the Trump administration for exerting pressure on Brazil's judiciary. Specifically, Lula decried the U.S. actions as "arbitrary and completely unfounded," asserting his unwavering commitment to upholding the democratic rule of law in Brazil. He emphasized, "I am certain that no form of intimidation or threat will compromise Brazil's mission to defend and uphold the democratic rule of law" (Timestamp: [02:23]).
This conflict arises after U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced visa restrictions targeting multiple Supreme Court justices, their family members, and close allies. The primary focus appears to be Justice Alejandro de Moraes, who is overseeing the case against former far-right President Jair Bolsonaro—a known Trump ally. Bolsonaro faces serious charges, including attempting to overturn his 2022 reelection defeat and plotting a coup to retain power.

A brokered ceasefire in Syria, facilitated by U.S. mediation, appears to be holding despite recent violent clashes. Last week alone, hundreds lost their lives in confrontations involving Sunni factions, Bedouins, and militias from the Druze religious minority. With fighting temporarily halted, humanitarian organizations are mobilizing to deliver essential supplies—food, medicine, and water—to affected populations.
In parallel, the Palestinian Health Ministry reported that at least 94 individuals were killed today due to Israeli military actions while awaiting food at aid distribution sites in Gaza. This adds to the grim statistics of hundreds who have perished in the past months while striving to secure basic necessities.

In a striking policy stance, the Trump administration is urging American citizens to have more children. However, this federal call faces significant pushback at the state level, where advocates and parents argue that there is insufficient support for families with newly born children. The crux of the issue lies in the lack of resources and support systems for infants and parents post-birth.
Katia Brittle reports that trust in medical institutions is waning nationwide, leading many to seek safe alternatives to traditional hospitals for childbirth. Yet, in some states, establishing such alternatives remains a formidable challenge. For instance, Katie Chubb has been striving to open a birth center in Augusta, Georgia, for over two decades. She highlights a critical gap in maternal and child healthcare, stating, "It's a massive concern here in Georgia, where we're so focused on being pro-life, but yet we're not caring about the life" (Timestamp: [04:21]).
Despite facing setbacks, including a 20-week delay without success in launching her birth center, Chubb remains resolute in her efforts to provide better care for mothers and children.

Jake Larson, affectionately known as Papa Jake, passed away at the remarkable age of 102. A World War II veteran, Larson survived both D-Day and the Battle of the Barge Bold. In his later years, Papa Jake became a beloved figure on TikTok, where he shared captivating stories from his wartime experiences, amassing an impressive following of 1.2 million users.
His granddaughter shared heartfelt memories, describing him as having "died peacefully last week, cracking jokes until the end." Jake Larson's stories not only entertained but also educated a new generation about the harrowing realities of war and the resilience of those who lived through it.
