Live from NPR News in Washington, I'm Lakshmi Singh. State lawmakers in Texas begin a special session today that is set to produce a controversial new map of congressional voting districts. NPR's Hansi Lo Wang reports. Texas is one of multiple states that may end up holding next year's midterm election using new voting maps.
Hansi Lo Wang
Redistricting is usually a once a decade process after a census. But four years after the release of the results from the 2020 headcount, Republican Gov. Greg Abbott has called a special session of the Republican controlled legislature to redraw Texas congressional map with the support of President Trump.
Greg Abbott
Just a very simple redrawing. We pick up five seats.
Hansi Lo Wang
There are a handful of other states in the Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, North Carol, north and South Carolina, plus Utah and Wisconsin that may end up with new congressional maps soon through lawsuits. And Ohio has to redistrict for its seats in the U.S. house because of a state law with a narrowly divided Congress. It all means that any changes with voting districts could make a big difference in whether Republicans keep control of the House or lose it to the Democrats. Hansi Loang, NPR News.

State lawmakers in Texas have embarked on a special legislative session with the primary objective of redrawing the state's congressional voting districts. Spearheaded by Republican Governor Greg Abbott, this move comes four years after the 2020 census results were released. The redistricting effort aims to adjust the current maps in ways that could significantly influence the balance of power in the upcoming midterm elections.
Republican Governor Greg Abbott emphasized the simplicity of the process, stating, “Just a very simple redrawing. We pick up five seats” ([00:56]). This initiative has garnered support from former President Donald Trump, aligning Texas with several other states where new congressional maps are anticipated due to ongoing lawsuits and legislative actions. States such as Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, North and South Carolina, Utah, and Wisconsin are also in the midst of potential redistricting efforts.
The implications of these changes are profound, as they could determine whether the Republican Party maintains control of the House of Representatives or faces a shift in power to the Democrats. Texas, being a populous state, holds considerable sway in this national political landscape.

Iran is set to engage in critical discussions with Germany, France, and Great Britain this week concerning its nuclear ambitions. The talks, scheduled to take place in Istanbul, aim to address and curtail Iran's efforts to enrich uranium, thereby preventing the development of nuclear weapons.
Esme Nicholson reports from Berlin, highlighting that these European allies are striving to revive negotiations with the United States, which had been stalled following recent Israeli and American airstrikes on Iranian nuclear facilities. “Finding a diplomatic solution is paramount,” stated Martin Giese, Germany's Foreign Ministry spokesperson ([01:36]).
The European nations have issued a stern warning to Tehran: failure to resume negotiations with the U.S. by the end of August could trigger the imposition of new international sanctions. Iran, however, maintains that its nuclear facilities are solely for peaceful purposes and denies any intent to develop nuclear arms.

In a significant development in the ongoing pursuit of justice for Breonna Taylor, a former Louisville detective was sentenced in federal court for violating Taylor's rights during the raid that led to her tragic death. The Trump administration has influenced the sentencing, urging the judge to impose a minimal sentence of just one day in prison for Brett Hakisson, the convicted detective.
Breonna Taylor's death, alongside that of George Floyd in Minneapolis in 2020, has been a catalyst for widespread racial justice protests across the United States, highlighting systemic issues within law enforcement.
In related news, a 63-year-old man trapped 130 feet underground in Italy's Abiso Paparino cave system was successfully rescued after a weekend ordeal. The Mountain Rescue Corps reported that the man sustained a head injury from falling rocks but was safely extricated by the rescue team.
