Environmentalists say a new law passed by Brazil's Congress will lead to widespread deforestation in the Amazon. NPR's Cary Kun has more on our story.

Brazil's influential environment minister has spoken out against the bill that allows fast tracking of some infrastructure projects. But Mauricio Goeta of the rights group AVAS says if the president signs it or Congress overrides a veto, Brazil's environmental reputation will be damaged just before it hosts this year's United Nations International Climate Conference.
Mauricio Goeta
We will no longer be able to be a climate leader not only this year, but forever. I could say because this is really the worst bill for us in our history.
Cary Kun
Under the bill, small and medium projects with potentially harmful effects could get licenses fast after self declaring they do not cause harm. Kerry Conn, NPR News, Rio de Janeiro.

Amber Alerts were issued late Saturday after the father of nine year old Melina Fradolin reported she'd been taken in the resort town of Lake George, New York, possibly by someone driving a white van. A massive search was launched, including state forest rangers and K9 units. The child was found dead Sunday in Ticonderoga, New York. Officials now say they identified inconsistencies in the father's account of events and the timeline he provided at this time. State police said in a statement there is no indication that an abduction occurred. State police haven't said whether the father, 45 year old Luciano Fradolin, a resident of Canada, is in custody. A press conference is planned for Monday. Brian Mann, NPR News.
