Live from NPR News in Washington, I'm Kristen Wright. NPR has learned the Department of Homeland Security is preparing to use military bases to detain migrants who've entered. NPR's Tom Bowman reports.
Tom Bowman
The bases include the National Guard's Camp Atterbury, Indiana, and also the active Duty Joint Base McGuire Dix Lakehurst in New Jersey. And both locations will be used for temporary housing for those who have connections to transnational criminal organizations or criminal drug activity. Now, the military airfield at the New Jersey location will be used for, I'm told, removal of operations. I'm told the Pentagon will allow up to two contracted commercial flights by ICE at a time.

ICE or Immigration and Customs Enforcement is also planning to increase the number of migrants detained at the US Naval Base at Guantanamo Bay. State lawmakers in Texas began a special session today that's set to produce a controversial new map of congressional voting districts. As NPR's Hansi Lo Wang reports, Texas is one of multiple states that may hold next year's midterm elections using new voting maps.
Hansi Lo Wang
Redistricting is usually a once a decade process after a census. But four years after the release of the results from the 2020 headcount, Republican Gov. Greg Abbott has called a special session of the Republican controlled legislature to redraw Texas congressional map with the support of President Trump.
Tom Bowman
Just a very simple redrawing.
Kristen Wright
We pick up five seats.
Hansi Lo Wang
There are a handful of other states in the south, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, north and South Carolina, plus Utah and Wisconsin that may end up with new congressional maps soon through lawsuits. And Ohio has to redistrict for its seats in the U.S. house because of with a narrowly divided Congress. It all means that any changes with voting districts could make a big difference in whether Republicans keep control of the House or lose it to the Democrats. Hansi Loong, NPR News.

President Trump says if Washington, DC's NFL team, the Commanders, doesn't change its name back to its original name, then he'll intervene in the deal for the team's new stadium in the city. NPR's Deepa Shivaram has more.
Deepa Shivaram
Over the weekend, in a post to Truth Social, his social media platform, Trump called the commander's name, quote, ridiculous and said they'd be more valuable as a team if they went by their old name, which was a slur for Native Americans. He said he may put a, quote, restriction on the team's new stadium deal that is poised to move them from Maryland back into D.C. what authority Trump has to get involved in a matter determined by the D.C. city Council is unclear. But today White House Press Secretary Caroline Levitt said the president was serious about his remarks. Trump also said Cleveland's baseball team, the Guardians, should revert back to their original name, the Indians. Deepa Shivaram, NPR News.

The foreign ministers of 25 countries, including the U.K. japan and Canada, issued a statement on Gaza today condemning Israel and saying the suffering has reached new depths. This is NPR News. Actor Malcolm Jamal Warner has died at age 54. As NPR's Anastasia Tsiolkis reports, he was best known for playing the teenaged Theo Huxtable on the Cosby Show.
Anastasia Tsilkis
Malcolm Jamal Warner was on a family vacation in Costa Rica when he drowned Sunday at a local beach. The country's judicial investigation department says he got caught in a current he could not escape. Fellow beachgoers pulled him out, but he could not be revived. Warner gained fame in the mid-1980s for his role as the only son of the Cosby clan.
Hansi Lo Wang
Tia, your ear looks red. If I want to put an earring.
Anastasia Tsilkis
On my ear, that's my business. He went on to a long career in television and on stage as both an actor and producer. He also served as an executive producer on the beloved PBS kids program the Magic School Bus. As a spoken word performer, Malcolm Jamal Warner won a Grammy Award in 2015. Anastasia Tsilkis, NPR News, New York.

A federal appeals court overturned the conviction of the man in prison for the murder of six year old Etan Pates. The boy vanished near his school bus stop in 1979. The case captured the attention of the country and he was among the first missing children to have his face and story featured nationwide on milk Cartons. Pedro Hernandez was convicted of murder in 2017, but today a court in New York ruled that jurors were given improper instructions. Hernandez will be freed unless Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg decides to try him again. I'm Kristen Wright and this is NPR News in Washington.
