In Washington, I'm Korva Coleman. The corporate parent of media outlets cbs, Nickelodeon, Comedy Central and Paramount Pictures has a new owner. The Federal Communications Commission has approved Paramount's takeover by the Ellison family and Skydance Media. NPR's David Folkenflik reports. Paramount and Skydance made concessions to the Trump administration to secure the deal.

Paramount controlling owner Sherry Redstone had told associates Paramount could not compete with the digital giants Netflix and Amazon. Skydance is controlled by another titan, Oracle founder and Trump supporter Larry Ellison and his son David. The FCC's approval comes after Paramount agreed to pay $16 million to settle a lawsuit by Trump against CBS News over an interview with Kamala Harris. Outside legal scholars called the suit for frivolous. Skydance also agreed to scotch Paramount's DEI initiatives in the US and to take steps to ensure ideological diversity in its programs and news. Extreme heat is still plaguing the central and southern US There are heat advisories ranging from Louisiana to South Dakota. It extreme heat could hit the St. Louis area where it could feel like more than 111 degrees today. More heat alerts range from South Carolina up to southern Maine. Dr. Michael Metz of Northwell Greenwich Village Hospital in New York says he is seeing people come in with heat related illnesses.

The National Weather Service has also issued extreme heat warnings today for Greater Philadelphia and Newark, New Jersey areas there it could feel like 107 degrees today. French President Emmanuel Macron says he plans to recognize a state of Palestine. But first, NPR's Michelle Keleman reports he's calling for a ceasefire in Gaza.

In a letter posted on X, Macron promises the Palestinian Authority president that France intends to recognize a Palestinian state. The French leader says he'll make the announcement at the UN General assembly in September. Next week, France and Saudi Arabia are hosting a conference on a two state solution. The US Is not planning to attend that. Meanwhile, the Trump administration's envoy on the Middle east is blaming Hamas for, in his words, not acting in good faith in ceasefire talks for Gaza. France is the first G7 nation to say it will recognize a Palestinian state. The US Will not. Last night on social media, Secretary of State Marco Rubio called France's decision reckless. Rubio says this sets back peace. You're listening to NPR. Brazilian beef exports to the U.S. are plummeting amid rising beef prices in U.S. markets. President Trump levied tariffs on Brazilian beef last April. NPR's Kerry Khan reports he's threatening to raise these even higher by August 1st.

Beef exports were already falling since April, when Trump slapped a 10% tariff on Brazilian goods. But in recent months, as the 50% deadline nears, meat supplies to the US have plummeted. According to Brazil's Meat Exporter association, sales dropped nearly 80%. Prices have jumped by 12%. Beef exporters are urging negotiations. Meanwhile, many are postponing shipments and exploring new markets. A quarter of Brazil's beef goes to the U.S. president Trump threatened the high tariff because of the, quote, unfair prosecution of Brazil's ex president, a political ally, the former Brazilian leader is facing charges of plotting a coup to stay in power after his 2022 election defeat.
