Live from NPR News in Washington, I'm Nora Ramm. Democrats in Maine nominated Troy Jackson, a logger and former legislative leader, to take on Republican Senator Susan Collins in one of the nation's most closely watched congressional races. Kevin Miller with Maine Public Radio reports

Jackson received all but five of the 571 votes cast by Democratic delegates during a special convention. He replaces Graham Platner, an oysterman and Marine Corps veteran who withdrew earlier this month. Like Platner, Jackson pledged to work toward universal health care to protect abortion rights and to stand up to the Trump administration. Are you ready to defeat Susan Collins?

The White House Correspondents association held its annual dinner last night. The event had been interrupted in April when a man tried to force his way through a security checkpoint and fired a shotgun outside the ballroom where President Trump was to speak. Trump spoke last night, saying he had scrapped the most biting parts of the remarks he was going to give last time. However, during his hour long speech, he spent time insulting various people, including singer Bruce Springsteen, former President Barack Obama and his own speechwriters. NPR's Ron Elving has more.

And then he was also wearing, by the end of the speech, a Trump in 2028 hat.

In Iran, hardliners have been pushing for increased military action against the US and its allies, while rhetoric from senior leaders calling for negotiation has been dampened. This week, the United Kingdom, Germany and France withdrew their diplomats from Tehran as a precaution in case the war with Iran kicks up a notch. The Latest was a 43 year old man from Nebraska who died of injuries he sustained last month when caught by a fire near the Utah border. The largest fires in Colorado have subsided, but the state remains in a serious drought and new fires are emerging. Basketball superstar LeBron James says he will join the Philadelphia 76ers. Nick Hiriyuki of member station WHYY spoke with Philadelphians about the big news.

This reminds me of when we finally won the Last championship in 83 when they got Moses because Darrell Dawkins was good, but he was no Moses. He only played good against Boston. Moses basically finished that team off. Sports media outlets say the NBA's all time leading scorer is signing an $8 million, two year contract.
