NPR's Franco Ordonez reports.

President Trump says he told the leaders of Thailand and Cambodia to stop the fighting, which escalated this week. Trump is in Scotland for some personal time and political business. Taking to social media, he warned that the fighting could threaten Thailand and Cambodia from reaching a trade deal with the United States. He wrote, quote, we don't want to make a deal with either country if they are fighting. Each country has blamed the other for starting recent military attacks. There have been deaths on both sides of the border, and tens of thousands of civilians have fled the area. Franco Ordonez, NPR News, Glasgow.

The Israeli military says it's beginning what it calls a tactical pause in fighting in three areas of Gaza. The the pause will be from 10am to 8pm local time each day until further notice. Israel also says it will begin airdrops of aid into the region. Chenel Low of the Norwegian Refugee Council says that's still not enough because the need for food and other supplies is so great.
Chenel Low
Conditions there are simply indescribable. Our colleagues themselves are going hungry. They are starving. They are frankly at a loss for words. After 21 months of pleading with the world to do something and now facing starvation themselves and seeing the widespread impacts across Gaza.

More than 100 international humanitarian groups have signed a statement calling for Israel to end its blockade of Gaza. Smoke from Canadian wildfires has made Montreal the most polluted city in the world. Emma Jacobs has more.
Emma Jacobs
The worst air ranking comes from IQAir, an air quality monitoring site. Environment Canada warned Montreal area residents to limit exercise and time spent outdoors. While the sky has had a visible yellow cast, the most dangerous health hazards are too small to see. Tiny particulate matter from wildfire smoke can cause respiratory symptoms, especially for those with asthma and other health conditions. Scientists say climate change has created ideal conditions for intense fires to burn in Canada's massive boreal forests for several years this summer, wildfire smoke has led to air quality alerts across Canada and in many U.S. states. For NPR News, I'm Emma Jacobs in Montreal.

At least 11 people were stabbed at a Walmart in Traverse City, Michigan, on Saturday. Five of those wounded are in critical condition at a local hospital. Police say the incident appears to have been random, and they do have a suspect in custody. Traverse City is a popular vacation spot on the coast of Lake Michigan, known for its Cherry Festival and its lighthouses. You're listening to NPR News. International public health advocate Sir David Nabarro has died. He worked to control diseases from AIDS to COVID 19. NPR's Yuki Noguchi has more on Nabaro's legacy.
Yuki Noguchi
Nabarro was a physician by training and spent much of his career working in childhood nutrition. But he's best known for his high profile roles at the United nations and the World Health Organization in trying to contain outbreaks of disease, notably ebola and then COVID 19. During the pandemic, Nabaro became a vocal messenger, urging increasingly polarized Americans to take the virus seriously. But he was also critical of repeated government lockdowns. Nabaro was knighted by Britain's King Charles in 2023 in recognition of his contributions to public health. Yuki Noguchi, NPR News.

The FBI is now investigating a hack of the Alliance Life Insurance Company of North America. Company officials say the hack took place on July 16 and personal data from most of its 1.4 million customers was accessed during that incident. The hackers took the data from a third party cloud based system. The company says it's contacting anyone who's been affected by the hack. Mexico city celebrated the 700th anniversary of its founding on Saturday. The country's president pointed out that the city was not founded by the Spanish as it's often thought, but but by the Aztecs. In 1325, events were held across the city where a reenactment of its founding was held. Hundreds of dancers dressed in traditional clothing also performed sacred dances. I'm Dale Willman, NPR News.

The persistent yellow haze in the sky conceals tiny particulate matter from wildfire smoke, which poses significant respiratory hazards, particularly for individuals with asthma and other pre-existing conditions. Climate change has been identified as a catalyst for the severe and prolonged fires in Canada's extensive boreal forests, contributing to the dire air quality conditions affecting not only Canada but also several U.S. states.

A tragic incident unfolded in Traverse City, Michigan, where at least 11 individuals were stabbed at a local Walmart on Saturday.
