The latest round of trade talks comes ahead of an Aug. 12 deadline that would see tariffs between the nations once again skyrocket. Washington hopes it can push China to reduce what it sees as excess production and boost Chinese domestic consumption. The negotiations will have big implications for the economies of both nations and may impact the likelihood of a future meeting between Chinese President Xi and President Trump. But despite the high stakes, both sides are unlikely to make major breakthroughs this week. Instead, the focus for now is on finding a compromise that avoids a return to sky high tariffs, extending a trade deal struck in May. For NPR News, I'm Jan Comes from Burnby in Taipei, Texas.

But in several previous attempts, the company's been unable to get these superheroes, who are variously stretchy, fiery, rocky and invisible, to blast off on screen. This time looks different. Fantastic Four First Steps will take in about $118 million in North America this weekend, and it will collect another hundred million dollars overseas. That will put it right about where Superman was for its opening two weeks ago. And there's no blockbuster competition on the horizon, so it's clobbering time at least through Labor Day. NPR News Now: Episode Summary – July 28, 2025, 8AM EDT
Live from Washington, NPR News Now brings you a comprehensive overview of the latest developments shaping our world today. This summary encapsulates key discussions, insights, and conclusions from the July 28, 2025 episode, structured into clear sections for your convenience.
Conference on Gaza Humanitarian Crisis At the heart of today’s news is the escalating humanitarian crisis in Gaza. A significant conference is underway in New York, drawing representatives from 115 countries to address the dire situation. Co-hosted by Saudi Arabia and France, the conference underscores the global concern over the deteriorating conditions in the region.
UN Human Rights Chief’s Statement The UN Human Rights Chief, Volker Turk, emphasized the urgent need for international intervention. In a powerful statement shared yesterday, Turk highlighted the severe plight of children in Gaza:
“All countries have an obligation to take concrete steps to ensure that Israel, the occupying power in Gaza, complies with its obligations to ensure that sufficient food and life-saving necessities are provided to the population.”

Israeli Military’s Temporary Halts for Aid Delivery In a response to the humanitarian demands, the Israeli military has initiated a temporary halt in operations within parts of Gaza for 10 hours each day to facilitate the delivery of essential food and supplies. This move aims to alleviate some of the immediate suffering faced by the civilian population.
US Involvement in Diplomatic Efforts President Donald Trump is actively engaging in diplomatic efforts to address the crisis. Currently meeting with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer at one of his golf clubs in Scotland, the discussions are expected to focus on strategies to mitigate the humanitarian issues in Gaza. Simultaneously, the US and China are convening for a new round of trade talks in Stockholm, aiming to navigate the complex economic landscape following Trump’s recent trade deal with the EU. Janesant Brumby provides further insights into these developments.
Trade Negotiations in Stockholm The latest round of trade negotiations between the United States and China is taking place in Stockholm, Sweden. These talks are critical, with a looming deadline of August 12 that could trigger a resurgence of tariffs between the two economic powerhouses.
Objectives and Implications The US administration is seeking to persuade China to reduce what it perceives as excess production and to stimulate Chinese domestic consumption. The success of these negotiations holds significant implications for the global economy and may influence the prospects of a future meeting between Chinese President Xi Jinping and President Trump.
Expectations and Outlook Despite the high stakes, Janesant Brumby notes that both parties are unlikely to achieve major breakthroughs within the week. The current focus remains on finding a compromise to prevent the reinstatement of elevated tariffs, potentially extending the trade agreement established in May. The outcome of these talks is pivotal for maintaining economic stability and fostering continued bilateral relations.
Public Testimonies in Houston Over the weekend, Texas state lawmakers convened in Houston to conduct public hearings as part of a rare mid-decade round of congressional redistricting. The sessions attracted hundreds of residents who voiced strong opposition to the proposed changes.
Public Concerns and Criticisms The feedback from the public was diverse, encompassing accusations of racism, cowardice, and corruption. However, Ashley Tabor, a newcomer from New Jersey, offered a distinct perspective:
“Good businessmen and women embrace the free market. They welcome competition because they believe that their ideas have merit and are innately persuasive. As soon as they start to cheat, one has to wonder whether their mission was ever noble or in the best interest of their stakeholders.”
[02:40]
Political Motivations President Trump has openly stated his desire for Texas to undertake redistricting to enable the Republican Party to gain five congressional seats in the upcoming elections. As of now, Texas lawmakers have yet to present any proposed maps, leaving the potential changes uncertain. Andrew Schneider, reporting from Houston, highlights the significant political stakes involved in this process.
Ceasefire Amidst Border Clashes In a notable development, Thailand and Cambodia have agreed to an unconditional ceasefire effective from midnight local time. This agreement follows days of intense clashes along their disputed border, resulting in the loss of dozens of lives since the conflict ignited last week.
Resumption of Diplomatic Communications At a meeting in Malaysia, representatives from both nations issued a joint statement committing to the suspension of hostilities. Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim commented on the accord:
“This is a vital first step towards the restoration of peace and security in the region.”
[03:11]
The ceasefire marks a critical turn towards de-escalation and opens the door for direct communications aimed at a long-term resolution of the dispute.
Box Office Success Shifting to the entertainment sector, Marvel’s Fantastic Four First Steps has had an impressive debut at the box office this weekend. Despite previous challenges in bringing the superhero team to the screen, this latest installment is proving to be a breakout success.
Financial Performance Bob Mondello reports that the film is projected to gross approximately $118 million in North America and an additional $100 million overseas during its opening weekend. This performance aligns it closely with the recent success of Superman, which debuted around the same mark two weeks prior. With no major blockbuster competition anticipated through Labor Day, the film is set to maintain its strong box office presence.
Marvel’s Persistence Previously, Marvel struggled to successfully launch the Fantastic Four on the big screen, grappling with diverse character portrayals. However, this time, the film’s strategic approach and timing have contributed to its favorable reception.
Bubba Wallace’s Landmark Win In sports news, Bubba Wallace achieved a historic victory by winning the Brickyard 400 yesterday. The race, held at the iconic Indianapolis Motor Speedway, was marked by a late rain delay and two overtime periods, adding to the excitement.
Significance of the Victory Wallace’s triumph is particularly noteworthy as he becomes the first black driver to win a major race at this prestigious venue. Overcoming concerns about running out of fuel, his win not only highlights his exceptional driving skills but also represents a significant milestone for diversity and representation in motorsports.
