Live from NPR News in Washington, I'm ryland Barton. The U.S. military says Iran launched multiple missiles at American forces in the Middle East. That ends the recent pause in fighting as mediators tried to get both sides back to negotiations. U.S. central Command says all the missiles were successfully intercepted. It says U.S. forces quote, remain vigilant at a high state of readiness. And American Saudi forces struck. And American and Saudi forces struck sites used by Iran backed militias in Iraq to carry out attacks in recent days. post on X, health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. Suggested his office had provided the diaries to Senator Paul. But it's not clear exactly how. Paul did publish a thread on X where he summarized his central accusation of Fauci. He said, quote, what he wrote privately and what he told the country are Two different stories.

NPR's Ari Daniel reporting. More than 1100 workers at AI companies have signed a petition calling on the government to back a global effort to pace the development of AI. NPR's John Ruich reports.

The petition says it's not guaranteed that AI will help create a better future. And to realize AI's potential, we may need the option to, quote, buy time to address emerging risks, develop security measures, and strengthen oversight. Leading AI companies believe they're close to automating AI research. And the petition says it's unclear how much this could accelerate AI progress with a risk that it accelerates beyond our ability to understand or control the resulting systems. Among the signatories are some of the top scientists and researchers in the field, working at companies including OpenAI, Anthropic, Meta and Google. John Ruich, NPR News.

Most U.S. stocks rose today after companies reported stronger profits for the spring than expected. This is NPR. Johnson and Johnson has agreed to pay $5.5 billion to settle lawsuits that claim its talc products caused ovarian cancer. The drug maker has been dealing with talc related lawsuits for years. The McGalloway project is one of the largest conservation efforts in New England. In recent years, nearly 80,000 acres in the north woods of western Maine have been protected from development. From Maine Public Radio, Susan Sharon reports.

The land surrounding the McGalloway river is heavily forested with lakes and pond ponds. It's a popular fly fishing and birding destination, but it also supports the region's wood products industry. Mark Berry of the Nature Conservancy in Maine says the project is strategically significant because it's surrounded by half a million acres that have previously been conserved.
