President Trump launched the Memphis Safe Task Force last fall with the support of Tennessee Republican Governor Bill Lee. Despite crime being at a 25 year low in the city, federal and local officials never mentioned immigration enforcement as a goal. But the first months brought a major spike in immigration arrests. A vast majority of those arrested did not have criminal convictions. That mirrors a similar trend in the first few months of Trump's ongoing Anti Crime Task Force in Washington, D.C. experts tell NPR it follows a pattern of this administration conflating immigration and crime. Nearly three dozen major wildfires are now burning across central and eastern Oregon cattle country.
